We just bought a new house (I only saw pics online). I had the carpets steam cleaned and there is still pet smell. It isn't urine/feces smell but pet hair - I would best describe it as wet dog.
Any tips on how to improve it? I have a 2 and 4 year old so putting little fragrance thingies in outlets is not an option. Nor do I like to smell lots of fragrance constantly but I'd be willing to try a little of something.
Re: Pet smell in new house
Fragrance stuff (candles, potpourri, plug-ins, etc) will just mask the smell. You need to eliminate it. If you seriously want to get rid of the smell, this is what you do...
Wash hard surfaces (walls, wood work, cabinets, etc) with a solution of white vinegar and water. Make sure you move out any appliances and get under and behind them.
Get the carpet cleaner back out, but this time use an enzyme cleaner (Nature's Miracle) instead of the soap. It removes pet smells like no other.
If there are any remaining curtains or valances, take them down. Either wash them or replace them.
Take down any window blinds and wash them in the tub. Hot water + vinegar or dish soap works fine. Just clean them off with a rag in the tub then lay them out outside to dry.
If you have duct work, remove the grates and vacuum down the hole. If you have baseboards or radiators, vacuum them off (tops, underneath and inside as much as you can) and then clean the exterior surfaces with the vinegar/water mix.
Vacuum the window screens and get the space between the window and the screen... especially if you have any windows that open out (screen is inside the window). You'd be surprised how much dirt and hair you'll find.
When you've done all of this, open the house up and let it air for a few hours.
You'll probably want to drop your kids off somewhere. This is going to take you an entire day to get done. H and I just did this a couple weeks ago. It took almost an entire day, but we dropped DS off with my mom and got it done. The house smells so much better now though. No more pet smell.

I agree with PP about putting in new carpet and underlay. We just bought a house and replaced all the carpeting. Even though the carpet didn't look stained/dirty on the surface, the underlay was covered in stains and smelled gross.
