I have an old fuddy duddy complaint

I think I've mentioned before that there is a Victoria Secret in my buidling.  They have an entrance on the street and one from our lobby.  I'm not a fan of the store in general, but whatever.  I HATE, HATE HATE that they have huge posters in their windows of provocatively dressed women.  They put new ones up this week and the they are close ups of new bras/boobs - seriously - each boob is like 3 ft across.  It just feels so demeaning to me and other professional women in teh building to have to walk by that kind of crap on my way into work.  And, especially if you have to walk by it w/ a male co-worker.  Ugh - I'm debating sending an email to our services director to see if they can talk to the building managemnt about this.

  • that wouldn't bother me at all to be honest. Why does it feel demeaning to you?

Haha, this made me laugh. But yeah, the ads are fairly provocative - it might be weird in the workplace. I like VS - they have some cute clothes - but sort of interestingly, their stuff isn't made for full-figured women so I don't always have a lot of luck.

  • It's a lingerie company. Of course they're going to advertise using boobs.

What about it makes you consider it demeaning?

  • Such overly sexual imagery in a professional setting seems out of place. And objectifying (sp?) women where we're trying to be taken seriously as professionals just doesn't seem "right"

Gotcha. Is VS the only shop in your office building? Is your office surrounded by other office buildings, and do they have retail shops? Sorry - not trying to play 20 questions,  I'm just curious! It does seem odd to have a retail location in an otherwise professional setting.

  • If its a mixed use retail/office building i don't really see any way around it. I would assume all their stores advertise using the same signs and materials, so they wouldn't have to abide by any certain rules, KWIM?

I mean I see what you are saying though, boobs in an office setting don't really mix. but I dont blame VS for that, more like whoever's idea it was to put a VS with a professional office building.

  • This is one those things where I would also hate it but realize I can't really do anything about it.  VS has a brand built on beautiful, perfect-looking women wearing sexy stuff and stupid stuff like angel wings.  They appeal to women who want to look like that and men who want their wives to look like that.  I'm sure there are plenty of those target customers in your building.

BUT, I really hate gratuitous, in-your-face sexualization of women.  Plus I think VS has undertones of women being stupid (all the PINK stuff?  Really?) Half prude, half feminist, that's just an emotional (moral?) stance I choose to take.

    Yes

Post hijacking. I don't see how people can be 'ok' with this type of imagery, but get all up-in-arms about nursing in public. I don't display even 25% of that much skin when I nurse in public.

yeah, I agree, I know they are a business and obviously this model works for them.  We're on a major street and there are other retailers in our lobby and there's no problem w/ them and I don't have a problem w/ VS per se, I just hate they are using such super sexualized imagery inside the building, where there really is a lot less traffic flow.  I wouldn't mind if they had posters w/ the models in bras/panties/lingerie - but just the super close ups are a little off-putting to me.

  • This thread is why I think this board is going to take over the Baltimore Knot board and just die out.

Right now, it has 10 replies and over 200 views.  20 views per reply does not make an interesting message board and gets tiring for those who are discussing for all to see.

    yup

and maybe the boards have outlived their usefulness.  Most of us communicate on FB anyway.

  • I will come out of lurkdom to say, I'm not sure how I feel about this...

I don't think that it would bother me, but I also tend to be oblivious to that kind of stuff.

When I worked in DC there was (and I assume still is) a giant VS in Union Station.  Often I would stop in there to buy small gifts (lotion, body spray, etc.) for co-workers when they had a birthday.

It always skeeved me out when I would see the school kids who are in DC for their school trips walking around in VS.  The girls were way to young for the stuff and the boys just had no business in there, in my opinion.

Who wants to shop for lingerie with a buch of 13 year old boys standing around and snickering. The associates couldn't really boot them out because it was a public place. so unless they caused a disturbance they had to let them be.

  • I'll reply :)

I didn't reply earlier bc frankly I thought it was a silly thing to complain about.  So instead of saying that, I just kept my remarks to myself.

I think it would be a lot more interesting around here if more people spoke their minds.  We always end up with a bunch of replies that are long-winded versions of "ditto".

This is my feeling as well. People get their panties in a twist about me nursing DS (OH NOES!  He's over a year and still getting the boob! Shock! Horror!) but there are boobs everywhere serving no purpose other than to turn men on.  Frankly I care more about what my bra looks on when I have a shirt on over it, than without.
