I never thought of myself as an American prude..but!

So I booked a spa day for myself tomorrow since DH is traveling.  I'm not really prude, after having many surgeries (down there), a baby, going topless on vacation, changing in the gym locker room, etc. I'm pretty open.

Til' I got this in my email confirmation.

Entrance is for both men and women. Wearing a robe is required and wearing bathing clothes not permitted

Yikes

  • I'm confused I guess. You'll have a robe on, so who cares if you have nothing under it, right? I mean you don't need to take the robe off unless you want to go in the sauna and couldn't you just wrap a towel around yourself? I mean you'd have to look at other people I guess but that never really bothers me, though admittedly I've always been in single sex saunas. For facials and massages and the like and all I'm always either naked under a robe or a sheet no matter what country it has been...
  • The thought of being surrounded by wangs while I'm trying to relax is making me giggle uncontrollably.

    yeah.

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
  • for my birthday, the husband asked zwiggy to help him find a spa.  It took quite a bit of research until she found one that wasn't like that.

there is one in the Amsterdam Bos that has bathing suit days once a week.  Email her and ask her I think she'll remember the name.

Dutch spas are full on nekkid.  You wear the robe when going from place to place but when in the different areas, you get naked.

  • Just do it! You'll be surprised how much no one cares. I went to such places in Germany and NL and it was great! So relaxing, and the nudity thing is just a hump to get over.

  • I'm totally a Canadian prude.  I can't do open change-rooms, have never gone topless anywhere, and I even have a hard time using public bathrooms.  It took me years to muster up enough courage to go for my first massage.

    I wouldn't be going!

  • yeah ive been going topless since i was 16 , always strip off butt naked at the gym and have no qualms about naked spas etc.

I think when i lived in Prague and ended up sitting next to my flatmates 82 year old great uncle and her 80 year old great aunt in a sauna butt naked i realized  i was not a prude in anyway :P

  • Most of the spas I've been to in the US are like this.  They might not specify up front no swimsuits but if you show up with one you'll definitely get the side eye.
  • Yep, same type of system here though quite a few places will also have specific women or men only days which definitely helps. They also tend to offer a mixed bathing suit day, which is my preference to be honest.

I just can't quite relax in a jacuzzi seeing strange men's balls jiggling about in the bubbles.

  • This post has just put me off spa's for life. I have never gone for massage because I am not sure what is suitable attire. I feel uncomfortable just in a swimming costume, I have never gone topless and I don't strip down to nothing in female change rooms, I use the cubicles. I am prude.

  • I'm with Enid.  I'd go and get it over with--it might be liberating!  Regardless, please report back :)

  • American prude here. I was even raised in a family that was extremely open minded about nudity by US standards, but I just can't do it. I would be searching for a swim suit day!

  • I don't exactly run around naked all the time, but I guess I am the opposite. DH and I went to a spa once here in Denmark, and I was really upset that no one in the sauna was naked. Why bother taking sauna if you have to keep your clothes on? Some things are meant to be done naked, like showering and taking sauna. I was really surprised too, since Danes don't seem to have a problem getting naked anywhere else. Who needs changing rooms at the beach when you can just strip right there in front of everyone and put on your Speedo? But in the sauna, oh no, we need our suits on. *boggle*

  • I played sport in college and all the showers were open.  I'm just used to being naked in front of women.  Men, I might struggle with, but women, not so much.  But I'd get over it...but I'd have to definitely get a ton of waxing done!
I like pineapples...they make life just so much more interesting.

I'm not a big spa person but my guess would be these are not coed situations. Are they?

It depends on the spa.  Some have separate areas, but I've been to a few that don't.  That being said, the percentage of guys in a spa in the US is far lower than that of guys who would go to a spa in Europe.

In that case, should I ever have the financial means to go to a spa, I will be making damn sure it's one of the "separate areas" ones! ::jumps on American prude wagon::
