What Age Would You Let Your Daughter Wear Makeup?

At home?

To School?

Re: What Age Would You Let Your Daughter Wear Makeup?

  • The rule in my house growing up was 13. My mom actually gave me a cute little makeup bag w/makeup in it as one of my gifts. It was the basics: Powder, blush, lip gloss, maybe neutral eye shadow. No eyeliner or anything dramatic yet. I felt like it was a good age and will probably do the same. I turned 13 the summer before 8th grade. I think 7th grade is the earliest I would allow it.

ETA: Things like the girly barely tinted lip gloss I would allow a bit younger. Also, if at home means playing dress up, then any age is fine. I put lip gloss on my 3 yr old niece the last time she was watching me get ready.

  • I was able to wear powder and lip gloss in 6th grade and I think 7th I could wear macara on my top lashes. Once I had a job and could buy my own makeup I could wear whatever I wanted, that was about 9th grade. I think if/when I have a daughter I'll address it as it comes up. Nothing more than lipgloss in public before middle school though. At home if she is playing dress up I might let her use the play makeup.

  • At home?  Eh, 3ish?  I'm not talking Toddlers and Tiaras craziness.  But at that age, if she's watching me get ready and wants some....I may put some gloss or something on her for fun.

To school?  I think 12-13 is a good age.  I think that's when I started playing with makeup.

  • If I was putting on lip gloss and DD wanted to try it, I would probably let her around age 3.  At this point, she would just try to eat it.

For school, etc. probably not until age 13/middle school.

  • Reason I ask is my boss has been getting into it with her 6th grader (11 y/o) daughter about makeup. Apparently she's sneaking some on during the bus ride in the morning.

  • I was thinking middle school. For my 12th birthday my mom took my best friend and me to the Clinique counter where they taught us how to put it on and then she bought us a bunch of (very neutral) stuff.

I'm not a parent, but I think I would try to compromise here. If my daughter knew the makeup age was 12 but she was sneaking some on on the bus at 11, maybe we could do lip gloss at 11 and then blush, etc. at 12.

I know it's a slippery slope to being "friends" with your kid or trying too hard to be a cool parent, but I reeeeeally don't want to be an outdated parent. My mom didn't let me wear spaghetti strap shirts (until I got a job and bought them my dayum self) because she thought it showed too much skin. It was a HUGE HUGE HUGE issue of contempt for YEARS. I mean, it was ridiculous. I wasn't trying to slut it up, just wear some cute tank tops on the weekends like everyone else and be a good 12yo sheeple. They were from Limited Too FFS!

Looking back, that's something I'll try and keep in mind when we have kids. Pick my battles and that would not have been one of them. I don't think makeup would be either.

ETA: I also think decisions and compromises like this will depend a lot on whether my kid is a good kid or an assshole. If they're doing well in school, have a good group of friends, are respectful and are otherwise pretty good (except being a jerk about spaghetti strap shirts or makeup) then of course things like that can be up for discussion or compromise. If they're an assshole kid, forget it.

Yeah... ITA with everything you said.

Boss is having a hard time with her daughter because she's at that age... Kid also has some serious balls with the crap she pulls. Give her an inch & she takes a mile type thing.

  • If my daughter is anything like me, she'll be wearing stage makeup at 3 for ballet and sneaking it on the bus in 5th grade then the principal will call me to say she's wearing mascara to elementary school again and it's innapropriate.

Yes, but at what age will you allow her to wear glitter? ;-)

Never. DH HATES glitter so I'm sure it will be banned.

  • As strict as my parents were, I was allowed to wear full makeup to school in 6th grade, and I'm ok with that. I'd already worn it a lot for ballet, and everyone else in my class wore it also. We had to wear uniforms and hose so that was how we individualized it. None of our parents let us look like hookers or anything, but I think it was a good age to experiment with it.
