What do you eat for breakfast?

I'm starting full time university next week (7 hours of French a day...wooo!) and I need some help with breakfast ideas.

Nothing seems to curb my hunger in the morning and I eat a ton at breakfast (think like 500sh calories), I've tried lots of combinations... egg white omelets, egg white and cheese sandwiches, whole wheat toast with cheese, cereal, oatmeal, fruit, yogurt.

The only thing that seems to keep me slightly full is nuts, muesli, or oatmeal with peanut butter.

Is anyone else like this? Bottomless pit in the morning? What do you eat to stay full?

On another note, I'm hoping the full time university will help with my bulimia issue. It's been better this week and I have therapy again tomorrow.

Re: What do you eat for breakfast?

  • I have a bowl of cereal with milk and a coffee.  Part of what you are going through is re-recognizing what hunger actually is (I had to do that).  What I also do is have a snack at 10am (I eat breakfast at 6:15am so that's about 4 hours later)  - either fruit or nuts or a mix of both.  It keeps me from eating too much and I can make it to lunch more easily.  Grazing - small and many meals are the way to go.

I'm glad that your treatment is going well and that you feel better!

  • I have this problem all day long, so I just eat more often.  I have two breakfasts.  If I'm going somewhere the first breakfast will be something that I need to make like oatmeal, eggs scrambled with a ton of veggies and whole wheat toast, ww toast and goat cheese, homemade breakfast burrito, etc) then a couple hours later I have a portable second breakfast.  This generally consists of something like a banana and pb, a bag of muesli, some almonds and a piece of fruit, etc.  I perfected this technique while in school.  I am a master of sneaking second breakfast while a professor was lecturing.

Yay for going to the university!  Does this mean you're officially finished with the school that employed the terrible teacher?

  • Yes, officially done with the horrible woman! I hope there no horrible people at my new school! :D

Thanks for the ideas. I'll try by making oatmeal, muesli or eggs before I leave for school (7:30sh) and bring a decent mid morning snack, maybe a banana and peanut butter or an apple and nuts.

  • I have the same issue.  I eat breakfast at 8:30 or 9 and am usually starving by noon.  I'll usually eat some nuts and maybe fruit then, so I don't gorge at lunch, which is usually around 1:20 or so.

If I do oatmeal I throw in some fruit, nuts and protein powder, which helps it last longer.  If I just do yogurt with nuts and honey or something like that I don't even make it until noon. I definitely need some carbs in the morning - all protein doesn't do it for me.

  • I eat nearly the same breakfast each morning (I'm boring like that) because it is the only thing that keeps me full. I do overnight oats, so I combine the below ingredients in a bowl and let them sit overnight.

    1/2 cup oats
    1 cup yogurt
    1 scoop whey protein
1/2 cup frozen blueberries (or other fruit)

I totally agree with this! I always eat breakfast around 7:30/8 AM, so I'm always hungry before noon. I usually bring some string cheese or granola to snack on, in the morning, and then have an apple around 3 o clock or so. I tend to eat small portions of things, so I've found smaller meals through out the day is the best for me! Also, a lot of times for breakfast, I'll make smoothies the night before, and those are good at filling me up :-)

Glad you're doing well in treatment and hooray for starting full time at the university! :-)

  • YAY for university, and I'm glad to hear you're feeling better!

I find loading the protein in the morning helps me a lot.  My breakfast usually consists of either an egg and ham/turkey sandwich (1 slice of bread, folded in half), then either cottage cheese or greek yoghurt with some fruit tossed in.  Or...a protein shake, with whey protein, peanut butter, greek yoghurt, and some fruit.

Then, if I get hungry before lunch, I usually go for a banana with some PB on it...delicious!

  • Thanks for the tips ladies, I think eating more protein will help and sticking to things like nuts, nut butter and fruit for snacks will help, I'll give it a try next week.

I'm excited to start, but a bit nervous about all day French! :0

  • ITA with the second breakfast idea! I am usually hungry around 10am (with first breakfast at 7h30). Carry nuts or trail mix in your purse as a snack. I like to make my own with peanuts, raisins, and M&Ms. It is salty  and sweet and packing enough substance to hold me over until the next meal time
  • I also eat breakfast and a mid-morning snack.  Breakfast is an egg sandwich (egg and cheese on english muffin) then I have a banana and peanut butter or string cheese or fruit around 10:30.

  • I eat one packet of istant oatmeal made with water instead of milk, then I mix in a handful of berries.   I'll usually drink 8oz of light soy milk as well:-)

  • Yay for university!

I usually eat a soft boiled egg and one whole grain toast or a piece of baguette or a piece or toast and a mix of cheese. This keeps me full until lunch.

  • Most mornings I get breakfast on base so it's scrambled eggs topped with cheddar and either a biscuit/gravy or grits. Depends on how I feel.

At home the default is a large bowl of cereal. Although I like doing waffles once a week. I top mine with peanut butter and syrup.

  • That is good you feel a tad hungry shortly after breakfast.  I suggest cutting back the calorie intake to closer to 3:00 and have a snack that is about 150 to 200 cals about 2 hrs later.  The protien load is good.  I normally do oatmeal and 2 hard boiled eggs (quick breakfast on the go) then about 1.5 hrs later I do an apple with nuts or some kind of nut butter (almond, peanut, etc.).

     Good luck!

  • Congrats on both school and the progress with your counseling!   Awesome on both scores!

I'm  the opposite, I get crazy hungry at night (which is not efficient or healthy).  To try to crumb that unhealthy pattern (over-eating at night), I do try to make myself eat breakfast and lunch to try to regulate things.

For breakfast-- I'm usually in a hurry, so I do more grab and go than cooking-- I usually go with cereal (I like flax blends-- I don't know, I'm a seed person I guess), reduced sugar/no sugar added oatmeal,  two slices of multigrain bread (Rudi's all natural), or if time permits, a cheese omelet w/ 2 pieces of bacon.

Nuts and/or peanut butter are great snacks/fillers throughout the day.  I always liked them when I had a tight class schedule-- a serving and a water was definitely a good pick-me-up!

I might cut back to around 300sh when I meet my goal weight, in about 7lbs. I'm recovering from anorexia and trying to restore my weight, so I'm not too concerned about calorie intact. Needless to say I don't let have myself eat nothing but chocolate all day, but I'm trying everyday to eat like I did before my ED (which has helped with bulimia, I'm not feeling the need to 'binge' as much) and slowly regain the weight.

I just find that I seem to get most of  calories early in the day and have a small dinner.

Where do you find flax blends or Rudi's breads in Italy?

Switzerland's cereal selection is lame...muesli (a million types though), special K, All Bran, and a couple types of children's cereals. I go to France to get Cheerio's! We have Cheerio's, Special K, Honey Nut Flakes, and a red berries muesli (really like it and is filling) at home now. I'd love a flax blend, I love the stuff I could get in the US :(

I would get the All Bran plain version and mix my own raisin in it for my own version of Raisin Bran. But is it just me or is the bran sweeter in CH. I like Toppas (frosted mini wheats) too. When I went to school I would stick those in a plastic bag and eat them on my commute.
