BWB/LO: I got a question for ya!

When did/could/will you find out the sex of your baby?

I'm asking because my coworkers and I had this conversation the other day. They're both pregnant and one was told that she'll find out around 20 weeks (she's only 12 weeks now) and the other already has an appointment for when she's 19 weeks (she's 16 weeks). Another pg coworker of ours has an appointment for this week at 14 weeks, though. Is that normal? I've always heard that 20 weeks is pretty standard, so 14 weeks seems super early to me and to my other two coworkers.

  • it's always more accurate around the 20 week mark. We have our A/S for around 21 weeks. with Evan we were exactly 20 weeks

  • I don't have a B or LO :) but we were talking about this today at work and my friend said the nurse told her she just did a 14-week scan and they were able to tell the couple the sex. I have always learned that you couldn't tell until 19 weeks! The child development teacher at our school said that at 14 weeks it can be pretty inaccurate because the parts are so so small, but hey, there's a 50% chance they'll be right!:)
  • Anatomy scans are done around week 20.  I had mine at 18w for the twins and week 20 with Abby.
  • That early on, they go by the "angle of the dangle" ... you can google image search that to see what they mean.  I still can't really tell.  I know Chelsey knew Jackson was a boy based on this early on, so it can be accurate if the person knows what they are looking for and takes enough time to examine it.

However, I don't know anyone who found out before 18 weeks at the earliest, and almost everyone I know found out at 20 weeks.  That was when we had the opportunity to find out as well, but we declined.

  • Ditto others. However, if you have blood testing done and know the chromosomes, you can know very early on.
  • I'm curious to hear if she's actually able to find out this week. 14 weeks just seems so early, especially since a lot of people wait until 12ish weeks to even spread the news.

  • there is a lot of talk about this on my bumpie month board. Apparently a LOT of u/s techs are starting to make guesses at the NT scan if asked by parents. Also, a lot of ladies are going for elective u/s at 14-16 weeks at a 3d place where they'll be told. Again, isn't totally accurate - although, waiting til 20 weeks isn't totally accurate either.

Dude, I don't know why but this totally annoys me. Why is everybody in such a hurry to figure out? I know it's a stupid reason to be annoyed. HA!

  • I've always been told it's most accurate/likely to be known between weeks 18-21.

We found out at 20w with Nolan.

We're *likely* finding out at 16w with the twins, but only because it's a level 2 ultrasound, with a very skilled tech, and my MFM. So in other words, not everyone gets those kind of u/s.

I agree! It drives me nuts too. I can't imagine paying for another ultrasound before 20 weeks just to find out the sex. Although, after what we've been through, I view the 20 week ultrasound as something different than just finding out the sex of the baby. My OB wouldn't even schedule us before 20 weeks and even at that time she said she wasn't 100% sure that Claire was a girl.

  • I did figure Jackson to be a boy around 12 weeks based on the angle, but that early on both sexes appear to have a penis. I didnt actually spread that (other than here) news until it was confirmed at around 18 weeks. The farther along you are, the more developed the genitals become, reaching a peak of accuracy around 22 weeks. At my work, they actually recommend getting the anatomy scan at 22 weeks, for the test to be as diagnostic as possible. I did mine at 22, but most excited parents don't have the patience. If arenas are scheduling the anatomy scan early just to find out the sex, well that annoys me too because they are putting that above the actual reason of the test, which is to assess the health of the baby. I have heard about the blood test they do early on now to find the sex, which was not offered to me so I'm not sure if that's routinely done now or not. Next baby I am going to try to hold off on finding out the sex until the anatomy scan becaue I want to have the tech write it in an envelope and I have plans for a big surprise reveal with family :) But I'm not sure if I have the will power to resist peaking!!

  • With working in OB, we have access to u/s's whenever we want. Most of our nurses get scanned about a bazillion times during their pregnancies by residents and doctors to find out the sex of their babies. We don't start trusting what we see until about 17 weeks at the earliest.
Finally a Mrs as of June 7, 2008
