Birth Control Questions

Disclaimer: This might just be a Too Much Info (TMI) post.

Just a few questions on Birth Control.

First a little background about my BC history:

I've been on a low hormone oral bc pill for about 8 years.  I never thought I really had any "side effect" until I started to read up about it a few months ago because I have been trying to slowly make the changes in our lifestyles to become more organic, and eco-friendly as well as all-natural in our food, and other lifestyle choices.  In doing so I took a good hard look at the vitamins, meds and prescriptions DH and I both take.  I realized that a lot of things I just thought were "normal" for me might be adverse effects of being on the pill-  thinning hair, excessive bloating,  moodyness, lack of libido...etc.

So even tho we aren't planning on starting to actively try to get pregnant until next spring I decided to go off the pill with the last pack.  So I have been 4 days off so far.  They say that within a few days the hormones leave your system and your body starts to go into the process of producing the hormones again on its own.

The only differences so far I can tell of is that my skin seems a little off... like I usually NEVER break out and I have a few small pimples (1-2) on my chin as of the last day or so.  And also I feel much less tummy bloat and a lot more energy. Maybe its all in my head?

Anyone else experience changes going off birth control?

I'm a little nervous for my period to come because I haven't had a one without being on BC in 8 years and am nervous it will be heavy, last a long time, or come with cramps.  I don't even remember what my period was like before bc so I just hope it regulates itself out quickly.  I really like the predictability of being on bc I knew exactly when and how long my period would come and last.

Any thoughts? or other experiences?

Re: Birth Control Questions

  • I have been on BCP for 20 years!  I went on it in high school because I have PCOS.  I honestly don't know what it is like to NOT be on the pill.  I am curious to hear about how it goes for you.  I often wonder about how much in my life is due to it.

  • I'm really curious to know how this goes for you.  I've been on BC since freshman year of college, so 6 years now.  I was a big swimmer my whole life and had incredibly irregular periods due to my heavy working out.  When I stopped swimming in college, I got such heavy periods that my doctor was concerned I would become anemic.  So she put me on BC.  Before that, I wasn't really planning on going on BC until getting engaged.  I do sometimes wonder how many of my issues, like migraine headaches, tiredness, etc. are due to the pill.
  • I went off BC because I thought it was making me too hormonal. After 3 years of not being on it I've figured out... I'm just hormonal naturally I guess.

  • I know BC effects people differently but I have never been able to take it for any extended amount of time. I get extremely emotional when on BC.  My Dr. took me off the pill completely about 2 years ago due to high blood pressure.  I can't definitely say the pill caused it, but my blood pressure came down as soon as I stopped taking it.  I am not over weight and I eat decently, the only high risk factor I have for High blood pressure is heredity. I always feel more "myself" when off the pill and I am regular so it doesn't bother me at all.

  • I went off BC in January, a couple of months before we were ready to start to try and get pregnant.  I didn't have much in the way of side effects (either on the pill or off), but getting my period off the pill sucks.  It was much heavier, and the cramps were terrible.  I can remember the feeling from when I was younger, before I went on the pill.   Other than that, not much changed.

  • I have been on the pill for about 16 years, and it has taken about 4 different types to get one that I am all good with.

Although there could be side effects I am not aware off, I don't get emotional, I don't get my period and my weight is regular.  I love not having to think about 'that time of the month'.

If one pill isn't working well for you, swap to another.  There are hundreds of different choices.

  • I went off BC in January (after 4 years) and what a good decision it was!  DH and I aren't looking to conceive anytime soon and I didn't have any real issues with the pill.  I went off for health reasons -- I just wanted to be cleaner on the inside, if that makes sense.  I'm the kind of person that hates any kind of drug or medicine in my body, unless absolutely necessary.  I won't even take meds for a headache.  I'm all about naturally soothing.  Anyway, putting those hormones into my body just wasn't appealing to me anymore.

My periods before BC were very heavy and I would have to stay in bed with a heating pad because the cramping was so bad.  I would also have side effects like diarrhea and vomiting during that time of the month.  Just terrible.  My periods after the pill are fine.  They're heavier ad there's a little uncomfortable cramping, but after the first day of that, I'm totally good.  My skin does break out more now, but it's a price I'm willing to pay to be pill-free.
