Cat Litter

Okay so my cat litter box smells and so does the trash we use for the poop.  We put the poop in a bag in the trash.  I haven't found any air freshner that really works.  What do you use?

Re: Cat Litter

  • We use Worlds Best Cat litter and it really helps with odor. We scoop out box 1-2 times per day. We put scooped litter in small plastic bags and always put the bags in the outside trash can. I would never leave cat poop in our indoor trash can.
  • I'm assuming the litter box and the trash can are plastic.

Plastic absorbs smells. It's just the nature of plastic.

You can try to scrub them with vinegar and water, maybe throw in some baking soda for good measure. Eventually, the smells will not scrub out and those items will need to be replaced.

Metal and glass do not absorb odors. Obviously you can't get around a plastic litter box, but maybe get a metal (stainless steel is a good option) trash can. Just make sure it's fully metal. A lot of them have a plastic bottom.

  • The only litter that contains our cat's smell is Fresh Step (we've tried many other brands). He digs everything into pieces, most liters break apart too easily leaving behind "that" smell. I would suggest you take the bags directly to the outside trash. I spray our can with a vinegar water solution to repeal flies (mostly from meat).

We typically wash the box outside once every other month or more if needed. Are you doing a full liter change over often enough?

  • Ditto MNVegas and srs: We use World's Best and scoop once a day into a plastic bag that we take directly to the trash can outside.  We have had problems where the box absorbs smells...we've been able to scrub this one out pretty well, but we had to toss a previous one when the smell just wouldn't go away.
  • I could never decide which smelled worse; our two boy cats sharing boxes, or the deodorant/perfume smell of the "freshness" of cat litter.  I was always like "it's not supposed to smelll 'fresh!' I just don't want to smell anything!!"  Try that wheat based one-- it's called Swheat, it's really amazing, I never went for those "newspaper pellets" or anything else, but I had a coupon, so I tried it, and it's in every box in the house now.  I hope you can get something that works though, because I know how frustrating it is to come home to litter smell!
  • I recently had someone comment on how we "have the cleanest cat box I've ever seen", so I feel pretty good making recommendations.  We have two cats (one male, one female) and use Arm&Hammer Essentials Clumping Litter, with a layer of baking soda at the bottom of the box.  Scoop once a day and put it into the outside trash.  When changing out the litter entirely, scrub the box with baking soda and vinegar.  Also we use a covered box, which I do think helps.

When we first moved we were staying at a friend's house, and we kept the cats (and their litter) contained in the tiny tiny bedroom with us, so controling smell was a HUGE priority.  At that point what I did was scoop twice a day into a plastic shopping sack which I then sealed inside one of those GIANT freezer bags.  I also would give a spritz of Febreeze Pet Odor Eliminator to the room.  Plus opening the windows whenever I could.

  • We really love Arm & Hammer Double Duty litter, and we have a litter locker which works the same way as a diaper genie.

I was really surprised by this stuff and how well it worked. However it didn't seem to last long. Granted we have 6 furballs. When DH cleans the litter box he always puts the sack outside in a designated trash bag so the house doesn't still smell. Hope that helps.

  • We use Worlds Best Cat Litter and scoop it every day - it's flushable, so it goes from the box into the toilet and gone... best litter ever.  If you go to their facebook page, they have a mail in rebate for a free 7 or 8 pound bag of their litter. It's worth a try, for sure. :-) Good luck.
  • We scoop once a day, put down a layer of baking soda, poo goes in a plastic garbage bag that is tied and goes into outside garbage. Works pretty well.
  • I gave up on the cat sand. We recently purchased an automatic litter box. Our apartment is super small and the box is right in the living room. Cat smell was just not okay. The automatic thing is cool, but the best part about the change was the type of litter.

The litter that came with the box is a Crystal type litter. It really helps with the smell a ton, and doesn't track as much around the house. There's no dust!
