Graduate students?

Hi all,

I was wondering if there were any other graduate students out there? I know it's not quite a 9-5 job (lol) but I thought I might find some of you on here.

  • Judging by your signature - math? Lol. Physics?

  • Biochemistry. What year are you in? How long is your program? Mine is at least 5 years, lol.

  • I'm getting my M.A. in Literature, but am going part time while I also work (teaching) full time.

  • Do you find it hard doing both? Why'd you decide to get your masters?

  • I'm in my 4th year, soon to be 5th (I started my program in January rather than September). The length really varies depending on an individual's project. It's biomedical engineering, so people who are really biology-heavy will take longer than people who are less so (like me). I think the average is 5 years, and *fingers crossed* I ought to be finished at around the 4.5 year mark.

  • We have a BME program here. It looks awful! They have to take a lot of the classes I take, but then they have to take ones that sound excruciating. What do you want to do after you're out? Post-doc?

Not so far, but I'm happiest when I'm ridiculously busy.  I'm getting my Masters both because it's something I wanted to do for myself, and also because I could potentially teach at the community college level once I'm done.  Who knows if I ever will, but it's an option I'd like to have available.  Plus, I get a fairly hefty yearly raise for having an MA.

  • I want to teach at a community college! I think its a much better experience, and you can get closer to the students, because of the smaller class sizes. I'm going to be teaching at the undergraduate campus this year, and I'm a little scared (I've never taught anything before, and I'm not a great public speaker) but excited too!

  • This is my first semester of my masters in educational counseling. I am a high school teacher, so I'm just taking 6 hours per semester. I like the classes so far, but we're only two weeks in! :)

I can see how it might appear awful, but I'm pretty fond of it. :)

I never took any bio stuff in my undergrad (just engineering) so I had to take all kinds of bio and biochem courses when I first started. It was kind of hideous, because I had no choice but to start with the graduate level courses (I didn't want to spend an extra year or two taking pre-reqs), but that part is done.

I think that I'm probably headed for industry, although I'd take a post-doc in the right circumstances. I worked for several years before grad school, so I was 30 when I started and will be 34 when I graduate. In light of that and the current job market, I don't think that following the normal academic path is for me - I don't want to be pushing 40 and struggling to find my first tenure-track position.

    How about you?

  • I don't want to do academia either. I don't want to deal with running my own lab and trying to write grants and being in charge of a million projects at once. I would like to go into industry or teaching, but at an undergraduate campus or community college.

  • MBA student here.  I'm working while going to school as well!  It's tough, but I'm hoping it will be worth it when I'm done.  Although, I've been looking at posistions while in school and it doesn't appear that many people are hiring MBAs as of late.  I'll be finished in November and can't wait!!!!!

    That's exciting! You're only 2 months away!

  • I started teaching at a community college after I finished my masters in chemistry.  Love it!  Now I'm back in grad school for a doctorate in education with an emphasis on curriculum development.  Since I'm in grad school full time I'm only teaching two CC classes this semester.

I know!  I am thrilled.  I can't wait to have a career instead of just a job!!!

  • I've been a graduate student for the past two years while I've been home with my son. I'm finishing up my second masters this semester and then hopefully returning to the workforce this January. My first masters is in curriculum and instruction, and my second one is in library science. I'll take whatever position I can get, but ideally I want one in youth services.

To be honest, I haven't really decided. I really like the idea of working in a school setting, but there's a children's hospital and school in my hometown that I would love to work at. I love the idea of working with kids with severe disabilities. Then I think that working at a hospital setting with people with TBIs would be great too. There's also the idea of going for my doctorate and being a professor at a university eventually. We'll see what happens.

Lol. Don't do it! I so regret going to school to get my doctorate.  I feel like this is 6 years of my life I could actually be living, instead of holed up in a lab all day.

  • Hey! I am second year PhD student in Genetics, Genomics and Bioinformatics (GGB) with a concentration in Molecular Bio :) Working on mosquito genetics, fun stuff. lol.
  • I'm finishing up  masters number 2 in Nonprofit Administration. I went full time for a year and now I'm finishing it up part time while I'm back teaching.
