PSA: Renewing DL

You need:

  • Your original marriage license or a certified copy - even if you're not changing your name
  • Birth certificate or passport
  • Social security card or W-2 or pay stub
  • Two of the following with your address - deed or mortgage/voter registration card/vehicle registration/utility bill
  • Your first born and/or two appendages

Full checklist here.

This shiit is ridiculous, but I had no idea when I went to renew that I needed all of this. Apparently everyone has to do this once per the Department of Homeland Security.

Re: PSA: Renewing DL

  • I had to go through all of this with my little brother when he went to get his license for the first time. It's crazy.
    *Old Nestie, New Name*

  • I can understand super strict requirements for the first time though. But for a renewal?? Here's my old license (with a picture of ME) and two other things with my name on it. Done.
  • This had just gone into effect right after I got married, so I went in to change my name and address and needed, no joke, 8 different things. Ridiculous.
  • It appears that you don't need the marriage license if you didn't change your name after you married. Haha, suckers! Guess who only needs 72 forms of identification when the rest of you need 73?!

  • Ugh don't talk to me about that. I regret changing my name everyday. But noooo... Beebee LB HAD TO HAVE the same name as H!
  • This one of the reasons why I haven't changed my name on my DL yet, but I really need to because I can't change anything else without my DL either. I feel like I'm going to have to go in with 100 different things with my two names on it just to make sure I cover all of my bases.

  • Insane.  I am surprised they don't require a blood sample and a scan of your retina as well. Stick out tongue

Me too :( But I can imagine the headache it would have been trying to decide what to do once we had a baby... so I guess I'm glad I changed it in the end.

My sister said this may be the only reason she eventually changed her name...but baby #2 is being born Oct 10th and she still has her maiden name. lol I guess in the end it didn't bother her.

This is what we would have done with my maiden as the MN. First Maiden H'sLastName. We'll probably still do that, but I should have just kept mine. Although I am glad to be rid of my middle name, so there's that.

  • Can I ask why those of you who regret changing your last name regret it?

Married is really long, people always misspell it (and my first name, too), and i just really liked the maiden name better.

First, maiden is wayyyy easier to say/spell. lol

Also I feel like I didn't think it through. I just changed it because we were getting married and I thought that's what I was supposed to do. I'm very bitter toward 23yo me for not even considering it as an option.

Probably the biggest thing though is I'm much more feministy than I was three years ago. I feel like by giving up my name I labeled myself as WIFE - which is such a small part of my identity to me and anyone who knows me, but of course the first thing that anyone who doesn't know me sees is my "wifely" name.
