oh dear lord...how will i live??

ok so, went to my kidney doctor about 2 weeks ago (4 freakin hour appt thank you very much) to see what's up/check-in. we discussed my unintentional weight loss (at about 40lbs) and my general lack of enery and not feeling well.

so, fast forward to now..i get a letter in the mail with some lab results and notes from the doc. i have super high phosphate levels which basically means my kidneys are not functioning properly (the medical term is hyperphosphatemia for those interested). so, i have to take a Vitamin D pill (a special one for kidney losers) and also limit my dairy intake to 1 serving a day. um WHHAT? that's like 1 serving of freakin cheese a day. i LIVE on cheese. help me help me help me.

so...my question...does the soy/not real dairy stuff have phosphorus in it too? i mean, how can i live without cream cheese and sour cream and cheeeeeese!?

anyway...the good news is that i'm doing OK. kidney function has decreased but it's been worse in the past. i'm hoping that by getting my phophate level back to normal, things will start to feel better too.

  • ok so...it's not just the phosophorus level that i need to be concerned about..it's also the Vitamin D...since i'll be taking the supplement, i'm guessing that's also a reason to keep dairy on the low.

and i just looked into soy...soybeans are a source of phosphorus so...boooo.

  • I'm sorry you have more illness going on!!

I am no help in the lack of dairy since I love it too, but Bella's blog is non-dairy. I think she uses a lot of soy though. Maybe try to find a message board for those that have what you have and share recipes? Or google that long word recipes? Or phosphorus free recipes??

  • Joe really likes the almond milk. I don't know about its levels though. Hugs. You have had a pretty crazy summer.
  • Seems like you got some good news and some bad news all at once. I have no idea or any suggestions. All I know is I hope it isn't SO hard for you to adjust. It sounds un-fun.

    And, 40lbs?!?!?!? Damn!

  • Oh wow... Maybe you could look up some vegan sites. Not that you are going vegan but they don't dairy right??

  • Ugh no!!!! I seriously wouldn't know what to do with myself.  But glad they figured out what you need to do.

I agree with BMW I would check out some vegan stuff since they don't eat dairy and see what options you have.
