Anybody watch the pilot of Up All Night?

I was quite disappointed. I usually love Christina Applegate. And it has Maya Rudolf. And Will Arnett. So.. what happened? The humor seemed SO forced and it was just all around a bit uncomfortable. And I never even caught completely on to a story line. My boyfriend said "Yeah.. so do you even give this show half a season?" Sad.. I was really hoping I would like it. What did you think?

Re: Anybody watch the pilot of Up All Night?

  • I watched just a few minutes, but DVR'd it. I wasn't really impressed either but then I wasn't paying it a lot of attention. I loved Christina's last show though- I don't remember the name, the one where she lost her memory.

samantha who?! i loved that show. and never actually understood what happened to it?

  • I have it on DVR so I'll probably watch it tonight. I'm bummed that it seems to be a let down.

  • I watched it and agree. There was no chemistry between the actors and all of the jokes seemed forced. I don't think I can do another episode.
  • the premise was good, the actors were good, but someone dropped the ball.the writers?

I felt like I jumped into the middle of a show, there was no beginning and then nothing happened.  It felt very disjointed.

but now I am happy that it will get cancelled and then WIll Arnett can be on the Office!

  • I'm in the minority but I thought it was funny. It did seem like they were trying to do too much (introduce everyone, set up relationships, etc) but usually pilot episodes seem awkward to me. It also bugs me when they show most of the big jokes in the promos, but it seems like they knocked all those out of the way so I'm hoping it will improve from here on out.

  • Every single joke that was even remotely funny was shown in the commercials.

    Big let down.

  • It really did not hold my attention. I only watched the first half of the episode. And Will Arnett is one of my very favorite actors. Heck, I even watched every episode of Running Wilde.

    Yes
  • I'm willing to give it another shot next week. As a PP mentioned, sometimes the pilots are a bit awkward because they're trying to do a lot - set up the storyline, introduce characters, establish the foundation of the show moving forward.

I was disappointed just about every joke in the show was in the promos, but I think going forward the show will get better.

  • I only watched a few minutes before going to bed, but what I saw was funny enough that I DVR'd it.    And I hadn't intended on watching the show at all.

But, I did just have a baby 3 months ago, so maybe it's more of an "it's funny cuz it's true" thing.

  • I thought it was hilarious! My husband and I were cracking up pretty much the whole time. I'll definitely watch next week!

  • I thought it was a little awkward and started abruptly, but I liked it and will continue to watch it.  A lot of it was hilarious to me - even though I don't have kids, so much of it really rang true (especially swearing around the kid and talking about how strong she is).  Maybe it's funnier if you've been around babies a lot?  I wasn't a huge fan of Maya Rudolph's character but I'm hoping that will change.

  • I tried to like it but couldn't. DH wasn't impressed either.

In the previews it was funny that neither of them wanted to get up with the baby. I didn't find it so funny after I found out they had been out drinking all night & were hung over. The diaper changing dilemma also wasn't funny once I knew they were tired & frustrated from being hung over.

My "babies" are 2 and 5 but I agree that some of it was funny to me because of the reality of it. Overall, I was underwhelmed but related to things like: cussing in front of the baby Embarrassed, fighting over who was up more (or at all) and the pain of a crying baby in the morning after a night out. The "I'll give you a million dollars if you get the baby" (or something like that) and "Are we dead?" lines were LOL funny to me because I have sooo been there.

(There was another show about the young couple and the woman was pregnant? It didn't last? I liked that, too. I always want pregnancy/baby shows to work.)

But yeah, I expected more overall- especially from Maya Rudolph. Although there were moments when I thought she was channeling Oprah ("Everyone do a cleanse with me!" = "Everyone go vegan with me!") and that was sort of funny.

Bottom line- it didn't meet my expectations but I will watch it again.

(And to the poster who watched every episode of Running Wilde- WOW, that's commitment. LOL )

While I agree that IRL I wouldn't find this all that funny, in the show I just sort of saw it as a 'those days are over' kind of thing rather than taking it to heart.  I mean, it's TV, so it's an exaggeration.  I have known parents that had the same experience the next morning with way less partying the night before - people are human, and it's easy to drink too much when you've been alcohol-free for so long.

  • It was okay.  Not as good as I hoped but I liked it enough to watch it again.

This. So when you watched it it wasn't funny because you've seen it a million times. I'm chalking it up to it being the pilot episode. Some of the lines were quite funny but I agree it did seem forced. I'll keep watching it for a few more episodes and hope that it gets better.

  • Guess I'm in the minority- I was laughing my ARSE OFF. I don't have kids, and thought I would think the show was too "I am new mommy" oriented. I thought it was great.

Eh it happens. People drink and get hangovers even after they've had babies. I saw it as more of a "wow our lives have really changed, we can't do this anymore" sort of thing.

I feel a lot of it was forced but I still thought it was funny. As new parents we really related to it.

I so agree with this, I related to every single one of those things. Also the silly arguement of who works harder...the parent at work or the parent staying home. I've so used the "yeah because raising a human being is so easy" line.

  • DH and I loved it.  I thought it was very funny.

  • I think it's a pilot and something they created to actually get a pick up. I think you need to give it a few episodes until they find their rhythm and what works/doesn't work.
