recommend your washer/dryer

The previous owners of our house left their washer/dryer for us, and now 2-months in, we're realizing the washer may not be washing too well. Some clothes are coming out dirty still.

We're trying smaller loads to see if that helps, but a new washer may be in our future. Where do I start? Top-loading or front-load? We do a ton of laundry, so I'd love one of those massive ones, but I'm a bit horrified at how expensive they are.

(ETA: we'd only need a washer, but can you get a "deal" if you buy both the washer/dryer together?)

Re: recommend your washer/dryer

  • honestly i have been researching this, we will need to replace the w/d at the maybe new house. it almost seems like a crapshoot the reviews are always up and down.
  • whirlpool cabrio washer hands down. I loved it!
  • Oh and Thanksgiving weekend seemed to have the best deals.

Good to know. We'll probably wait a couple months to save $$$ and get a good deal. I was thinking maybe Veterans Day, but Thanksgiving is a better idea.

ooo this is excellent advice!  we need to buy a w/d, fridge, dishwasher probably so it would be nice to do a combo during tgiving weekend.

  • We bought a Frigidaire stainless steel kitchen package (stove, above range microwave, dishwasher and fridge) last Columbus Day for $1300. from Best Buy  They were even awesome about delivering them in late November because we had nowhere to put them in the new house (think kitchen was totally non-existent down to the floor). So, def check the circulars for Columbus Day deals.

For W/D, we bought a GE HE washer (a top loader that's like a front loader) and dryer on Black Friday at Home Depot.  I think the set came to around $850.  I have no complaints.

All of our appliances are very energy efficient, which is nice.

  • Also, if you have Peco, they had a rebate program where if you filled out a form and proof of purchase, they sent you a couple of bucks for buying qualifiying energy efficient applicances.  I am not sure if they still have it, but a check in the mail from Peco is definetly nice.  I think we got around $200.00 back. The info should be on their website.

  • We have LG front loaders with all of the bells and whistles.  We got them to move into our new house in 2007.  Knock on wood, there has been nothing wrong with them in the past 4 years.  And we do a shitton of laundry.  Front loaders do tend to get smelly, but I personally like front loaders better.
  • The previous owners of our house included the washer and dryer.  My first load of laundry = entire basement flooded.  They neglected to tell us that the agitator was no longer connected to the machine.  awesome.

Our dryer still works, but we replaced the washer with an LG front loader in March 2009  Not sure of the model - but it is awesome and holds so much stuff.  We got a great deal at Home Depot and a discount if we ordered the pedestal.  Best decision ever.

  • We just went through this song and dance with our new house. I forget all the reasons we picked a front load but we did a lot of research and there were good reasons of some kind!  We got a samsung washer/dryer pair for about $1k from Best Buy (check their website for sales that arent in stores). So far they are amazing, all digital with odd but endearing novelty songs that signal the cycle end and super easy to use. My favorite feature is a delay start on the washer which I am all over in order to have laundry ready to throw in the dryer both when I get up in the morning and when I get home from work. Ive also heard great things about LG .

  • We bought an LG set from Home Depot last year and love it so far. I agree with the previous poster that the delayed start is amazing. The only thing that I miss is having the option to soak something, or run an extra spin. Those aren't as easy to do now as with my very old top loader, and for cloth diaper wash I might miss that in the future.
  • If you can, I would wait for Black friday.  the past couple of years, there has been some good deals on washers and dryers.  I have also seen some ads from Lowes for a washer and dryer, front load for like 896 for both.
