Recommend your GP

I need a new one.  Preferably on the West side (WDM, Urbandale, Clive) and within Iowa Health.  I will never, EVER, go back to Lakeview Family Med again.

Thanks.

Re: Recommend your GP

  • I absolutely love Drs McKellar and Hembry out here in Waukee.  They are both genuine, nice guys that take the time to actually listen to what is going on.  I've seen Dr Jenna Kemp out here as well and really like her, but I've only seen her once so I can't give a full-on recommendation.

It sounds like you had a bad experience at Lakeview.  I hope it was nothing serious.

  • When I lived in U-dale I saw Kimberly Goerdt. Love her! She was so kind and thorough, and I never felt like I was 'just another patient.' I switched because the location is not convenient anymore, but I'm considering going back because no one else compares.

  • Thanks for the recs, ladies. I do appreciate it.

This 'break up' has been a long time coming ;)  A few examples: One time I went in and for ongoing knee pain.  After a quick poke around,  I was quickly dismissed and told to just relax, take some ibuprofen.  Three days later I could barely walk and my knee was the size of a grapefruit.  Turns out I had a torn meniscus, frayed patella... all of which required months of physical therapy.

Keep in mind, I have an insanely high pain tolerance so for me to complain it has to be something really big.

On Sunday my throat hurt so I made an appointment on Monday.  Went in, they looked around, send it was allergy 'drainage' and sent me on my way.  Tuesday it was worse and it was white on one side (tmi, sorry) so I went in again.  SECOND time, said it was drainage, said there was nothing they could do, and sent me away in pain.  I woke up Wednesday with my throat white on BOTH sides and barely able to drink or swallow, forget eating.  This can't be right!  So last night I went to the Urbandale walk-in to be seen and yep, sure enough it's tonsillitis.  Thank goodness someone took the time to actually do a strep test and then look into other options.

Sorry, that got really long but I'm just so frustrated with their lack of care.  It's been more than just those two times, but those are the two most recent and it leaves a sour taste with me.

  • Ugh...that sounds awful, Molly!  I don't blame you for wanting to switch.  I don't like my doctor either, so last year I just went to the Urbandale walk-in the 2 times I needed to see someone.  I really liked them and intend on switching to someone there, I just haven't done it.

You know, I saw Dr. Shirk there as a walk-in when I had "strange indigestion".  Within a few minutes he had figured out that this was something pepto wasn't going to help... it was my appendix!  He was so sweet and thoughtful.  I had emergency surgery later that night but two days later he called me to see how I was feeling, etc.  At the time he wasn't accepting new gp patients but I really, really need to follow back up on that.

He was WONDERFUL.  I think you should check into that as well ;)

  • I go to Marla Onishi & love her. She's at Mercy West Family Practice, which isn't within Iowa Health. If Dr. Shirk isn't accepting new patients ask him to recommend someone for you. I found my doctor by asking for a referral from a walk in doctor that I liked & trusted. (but who only did walk ins)Sorry you had so many issues with your old practice.

I LOVE Dr Shrik.. however, he is only doing walk-ins as he is on his way to retirement. I saw him last winter a few times when I was sick for like 3 weeks.. the other docs told me to "wait it out".. he actually ran tests and let me stay after the clinic had closed to figure out that I most likely had mono.. he went above and beyond.. I wish I could always see him! I also like Dr Teeter there.. DON'T go to Dr. Jean at Urb Fam Phys.. my experience with her is like your experience at the other clinic..

    Nooooooooooo!!

Now that you mention it though, maybe that was what he told me originally.  After all, it was a hectic visit ;)  But I knew then and there I wanted him to be my GP!

sigh.  But thanks for the other recs.  Urb is so, so close so I'd like to make it work as long as there is a doctor there that is as awesome as Shirk!
