Need furniture store recommendations

DH and I moved here 3 years and have only bought nursery furniture since moving. Now we're looking at getting all new living room/family room furniture. We have a baby and an (aging) cat so we want something of decent quality that can stand up to wear and tear, but nothing too expensive since I know it'll get beat up. We're thinking we would like a sectional couch and a new coffee table. Any suggestions as to where to get something nice but for a decent price?

  • When we moved into our house 3 years ago, we bought most of our stuff at Belfort and Macy's. The leather couches we got at Belfort have held up especially well, given that we have two toddlers crawling, drooling, and climbing all over them. We also got two awesome couches, including one sectional, at Desi Living Innovations in Pentagon Row. They had great prices and you could really customize your sofa's and had a lot of fabric choices.

  • When we bought our house two years ago, we bought two couches - one from Hamilton's and one from Macy's. I love them both. The one from Macy's is microfiber and amazingly durable.

  • I know it doesn't sound "cool", but we've had a lot of success with JC Pennys.  Their Gaithersburg store has a furniture section (others closer to you may as well) that you can check out, or if you like something online you can have it shipped to a nearby store for free.  Their quality is pretty good, as are the prices and there's always a sale.  Whatever you do don't buy from Marlo... I don't know anyone that doesn't have a horror story from them - great selection and cheap prices, but terrible customer service & terrible quality.
  • When we bought our house we went to Wolf furniture and was very suprised and happy with the prices/quality etc.  They're in Hagerstown but they have a website also.  (we bought 2 living room sofa's, chair, ottoman, dinning room table, coffee table, dining room chairs and a credenza for 4500).
  • Another rec for JcPenney. We bought our bedroom furniture from them and we've been very happy with it. It also looks much nicer than I would've thought JcPenney furniture looks!

  • Ditto not going the Marlo route. I think the lower quality furniture might be ok if you just wanted some pieces to last till the kids are older, throw it out, and buy all new but not the way to go for durability.

Some love it, some hate it - but the advantage to Ikea stuff is, if the kid spills a juice box on your bright yellow couch - no biggie! Sixty bucks and a trip to Ikea will get you a new cover and a new(ish) couch.

  • We have furniture from Havertys, Bassett Furniture, Ethan Allen, Gardiners, and some from Ikea and Target.
  • Ditto Hamilton's, Belfort, Basset.

There's also Room & Board, Crate & Barrel, Arhaus and Greenfront.
