speaking of sperm donors

Did anyone read this article on boston.com today?  link

It's about a guy who donated sperm when he was in law school and now has at least 70 biological children.  He recently met two of them for a reality tv documentary.

I never thought much about sperm donation before, but I was really surprised that they will give out the same person's sperm to that many different people.  That is a lot of close relatives running around with no idea they are related!

I also found the half-sibling registry idea fascinating.

The guy's fiance did not sound pleased about all of his "offspring".  I'm not sure how I would feel if I were in that situation.

  • I didn't read the article, but my understanding is that laws are catching up with a lot of ART issues that arise, and there may not have been a ton of regulation going on when he was a donor. And damn, he must have made himself sound good on paper!

  • I saw a similar article on google last month about a guy in CA who has fathered like 150 kids via his donation. It said that some of them got together for a reunion and a lot of them look alike.

The problem is that most likely these people probably live within a relative distance to each other and if they don't know or realize they have the same sperm donor genes...you get the picture.

    What are ART issues?

And MrsC, yes, I get the picture.  Even if people don't live close to each other, the world is so small these days.  And all of these children are pretty close in age.  I think in this case they ranged from newborn to 9 years.  And they are still selling his sperm!

Assisted reproductive technology. Sorry, was in the IF world for a looooooong time. Issues like Kate + 8, Octomom, surrogacy, Indian surrogacy, sperm donors with 70 "kids", IVF embryo switches, etc.

  • Ah okay thanks.  We are living in a very different world than 20 years ago.  Crazy.
  • I know a couple who used a sperm donor, and they had the option of buy all of his sperm so their children wouldn't have any half-siblings out there. They did, and now have two kids.

  • This is all fascinating.  I never thought about all the half-siblings who might accidentally end up together, nor did I know that one could purchase all of the donations from one person.

    Very, very interesting.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball
