We just bought a new dryer, and the installer said that we should consider having our vent cleaned soon. He said he would do it for $200. I thought that seemed a little pricey, and I wonder if there's a way I could do it myself. Has anyone tried this? Or do I just need to suck it up and pay for someone to clean it for us?
Re: Cleaning dryer vents
Planned Executed
Cleaning our dryer vent is fairly simple. Pull out the dryer, unhook the connection & clean the vents. Our vent goes straight up from the laundry room to the roof, we're able to use a flashlight & mirror to make sure it's clean. We also go up on the roof & clean out the cap on the vent.
If your venting system has more twists & turns it may be more difficult to clean. In ours the lint only gets caught at the connector & the outside cap.
We are having someone out to clean our air ducts so I've gotten a few added quotes for the dryer vent. Most companies add the dryer vent cleaning in cheaper or free if you are going to get your air ducts cleaned but alone most of them were quoting $175 for dryer vent cleaning.

Remove vent cap from outside wall.
Detach vent and pull dryer away from the wall.
Insert leaf blower nozzle in vent pipe.
Turn on, wait a little bit, turn off.
Check the pipe for cleanliness. Repeat previous step as necessary.
Detach back of dryer, vacuum out lint mess.
Re-attach back of dryer, shove back in place, re-attach vent pipe.
Enjoy at least 30 minutes off of your load drying time.
Oh, get a rake and clean up your yard.
