Silver Spring & Takoma Park question

Hello, ladies!

Thank you for your help on my earlier post asking for advice on where a new transplant should live. I've since been offered a job in Silver Spring, and my husband works in DC near McPherson Sq. We'd like to rent for a year or so before deciding where to buy, and we are leaning toward Silver Spring or Takoma Park right now. We're looking for a bit more space at this point and would like to rent in an area where we would also potentially buy in the near future.

The challenge we're encountering in our rental search is that most are in high rise apt buildings, while we are more interested in renting an apt or condo in a smaller building, or even a townhouse. In Takoma Park rentals seem to be almost non-existent. I did read on another board that any rentals are usually a basement apartment in someone's home, but I have no idea how to go about locating these.

So! I'm exhausted by craigslist and would welcome any recommendations for realtors dealing with rentals in SS or TP or any insight or advice about the area. Seems like the right kind of place for us!

Thanks so much...

Re: Silver Spring & Takoma Park question

  • Hi there!

I live in Takoma Park and love love love it. So excited you're looking at the area!

It seems that lots of apartments in my neighborhood are listed on our local listserv. If you'd like to send me an email with the details of what you're looking for (I'll PM you my email address), I'd be happy to post it for you.

Ha. I was just going to post the CL listing from this morning. I will leave it to you :-)

  • Thanks to both of you! Just PM'd my email.

I'm really grateful (and getting tired of the search!).

  • You work/commute situation sounds exactly like mine and my husband's, and we're very happy living on the border of silver spring and takoma park, so I support this. :)

I love the positive reinforcement! Any recommendations about the area or where to live are much appreciated...
  • Wines and Court, it'd be great to add another to our ranks! :)
  • How many beds/baths are you looking for, and what is your price range?

  • Ideally, we're looking for a 2bd or a 1 bed plus an office or den, one bath is fine. We also have a car, but not sure how much of an issue parking is in the area. We could probably go up to 2300 or so, but, of course are happy to stay below that! :) Metro accessibility is important to us, and I know that can drive prices up.

    Thank you!

  • I definitely think you can find something in that range. Craigslist is a good place to look, but I know it can be hit or miss.

I think my next door neighbor is either going to put her house on the market or look for a new renter in October when her current renters move out. If she wants to rent it out again, I'll send you a PM with the info. It's a 3 bed/2 bath house, relatively close to Metro, and I love my neighborhood!

If you end up not being walking distance to the Metro, there are some options. First, you can take a bus to the Metro. There is also paid parking in a garage near the SS metro, but the cost can add up. There is quite a bit of street parking (free!) near the Takoma Metro if you get there early enough. We've done all of those options at various times.

    .

Please do let me know if your neighbor decides to rent! I'm so glad I posted here.

  • We used to rent from this company, and he was a good landlord.  Let me know if you have any questions!  Good luck!  And welcome to the area!  We now live in Wheaton, and there are some good rentals in that neighborhood too.
