Networking events/gatherings
Anyone has gone to one of these? I'd love to hear about it. what should i expect?
To be honest because I am a shy person, I am a little nervous about this but I am definitely going to go and not give up on the opportunity since I am looking for a job and this can only help. I don't expect it to help quickly or right away, but networking is good. I'm just shy and not the type of person who'd just walk up to someone and start a conversation so I'm nervous about tomorrow's event.
If anyone has gone to one, I'd love to hear your experience. TIA.
Re: Networking events/gatherings
networking events are populated by people trying to make connections. Everyone there wants you to buy something from them so most will approach you.
Smile. Have a firm handshake. Practice balancing a drink & a plate while shaking hands. Get some inexpensive cards printed with your contact info so you can give it to people who may be able to help in your search.
The RSVP did say bring lots of business cards.
I've been out of work since March and even though my previous position didn't provide us with business cards, when I worked there, I had printed myself business cards. I know it's not ideal, but should I bring those with me? It has my email and phone and address, but my previous job title.
I didn't know about this event until yesterday so I wasn't prepared to order cards. WWYD??
I'm going to order new cards without titles or anything in case in other networking events come up in the near future.
I think Staples can do cards in a few hours.
Old cards from your old company with contact info that you no longer have would be more useless than no cards.
You want your cards to have your name & contact info. More like a calling card.
they have my name, personal email, address and phone. The only thing it has about my previous position is my job title and the company's name.
I'm calling Staples though. thanks for the information.
I've been to more networking events than I can count, and nobody was trying to sell me anything at any of them. Everyone of us do the same thing in the same industry. We all have different levels of experience or different areas of expertise, but many times compete with one another for the same customers.
I see networking events as a way to meet industry colleagues from different parts of the country (or world). It's useful to know people who can offer a different perspective, or who have more experience in certain situations that might come up. It's good to know that I can phone them or email them if I have questions.
