to cruise or not to cruise

we are considering a short cruise out of port canaveral in october. On the one hand, it'd be fun to get away for a few days, and the short ones are pretty reasonably priced. But it would mean days off/money spent/blah blah blah. And since these short cruises are on the older boats I'm wondering if it's going to feel run down or dirty or something.

We're looking at either a Carnival or Royal Caribbean 4 night Bahamas cruise. The Carnival one works a little better with our schedule (ie fewer days we have to take off).

I don't think we care so much where we go, we just want to relax. We had big ideas to fly away somewhere and it never materialized so now this just looks easier if we are going to do anything at all.

Has anyone been on a cruise like this? What'd you think? Did you like it? Should I go? Talk me into (or out of) it

Re: to cruise or not to cruise

  • I'm sure some of the other girls will have more experience with the cruise ships and ports down there but I was very happy with our 5 day Carnival cruise in 2009. We're going on a 7 day next month and I'm looking forward to it. I think it's a great, easy vacation option.

  • We did this for my bachelorette party and it was fantastic. However, it was a bachelorette party so it might be different w/just you and DH. The boats are older (we did RC) so there's definitely not as much to do, but really, you're not on the boat long enough for this to matter. We boarded the boat Fri afternoon, woke up Saturday and had drinks on the deck as we came into Nassau, hung out in Nassau all day, got back on boat at night, woke up and we were at Coco Cay all day, got back on the boat late afternoon and then the next morning we were back at port.

  • I'd do whichever worked better financially & schedule-wise.

  • Cruise! I've never done RCCL, but we've done a lot of Carnival and a lot on the older ships. You get what you pay for, but it's so cheap that I'm okay with a little rundown. We have fun wherever we go. It is what you make it!

We paid about $400 more for a nicer NCL cruise (and we had to go out of Miami) and I'd say it was worth it, but it didn't make Carnival cruises less fun if that makes sense.

Also we've learned to just budget a LOT for alcohol so we don't stress about it the entire time. :)

We're planning on for January/February with some friends. I love long weekend cruises! Let us know if you have any specific questions about cruises or Carnival specifically.

  • Do it! We have cruised Royal and Carnival. We cruised Royal out of Miami and Carnival out of Jax. We enjoyed the RC activities/shows/drinking fests more than Carnival.

For short cruises, I would pick whichever worked better for your schedule/finances.
