Has anyone been to a dermatologist?

I have my first appointment today.  I had 2 small red spots come up on my face that haven't gone away.  While I'm there I figured I'd get a skin cancer check.  Has anyone had one?  If so, should I expect to strip down to my undies or even less?

Re: Has anyone been to a dermatologist?

  • I've been twice.  I left on my bra, underwear and then was given a robe that opens in the front.  It's a little awkward, but is pretty quick.
  • same as starlet as far as what i have to wear. my derm is hot too so it's really not fun to have his face inches from my body. be prepared to get biopsies - they tend to do them more than not but they are pretty painless (you are numbed up well). i had one that came back cancerous on my back thigh (common area apparently for those of us who spent hours laying out on our tummies!) and had to go back to get a greater area removed. that wasnt so bad either and they got it all. if you have anything that comes back positive on your face you may have to have that removed by a plastic surgeon. that's what they said when i had a biopsy on my face. that one was negative so it didnt end up being an issue. good luck and definitely smart to get checked!
Me:39 Dx LPD, Fibroid, AMA and all that goes with that. H:37 Dx low motility and low morphology. TTC since 3/12. Clomid 8/12 and 9/12: BFN. 11/12 on a break for Myomectomy sched. 11/26. Resume TTC early 2013.
  • Thanks for the info!  I hope it's quick because I'm not looking forward to being examined that close.  :)
  • ok so I got to the Derm every 3 months. yep..i'm that lucky. I've had about 12-15 moles removed and all have come back severely displastic (meaning very abnormal). There are different degrees that they can be abnormal...and of course mine are the worst..which buys me frequent trips to the Derm. Everytime I go they have my take off what I'm comfortable with...i usually wear a tank top and then if i need them to see anything under it, i move it or wahtever. every doc is different...even in the same practice. i saw the other doc once and she had me put on a gown. honestly...you want to make sure they see EVERYTHING. the moles that they've taken off do not look wierd/strange to me at all! pay special attention to any new or changing moles.

liek MD said, the removal process is simple. you only feel the first teeny sting of numbing stuff and then they razor off the mole for biopsy. they will call you in a week or so to tell you results (if they need to take larger margins off if it's abnormal). if you're lucky like me...you get to go back, have surgery (about a few inches work of scar depdnding on how bad it is) which is simple and painless...a little discomfort depending on location the next day. stiches come out after 12 days.

    good luck!

  • A little late but yes, down to your undies and that's it.  Of course it's weird but it's your health you're talking about, so you'll get over it :-)  I've been to the dermatologist since I was little, we have a history of melanoma in my family.  I've had 3 pre-cancerous moles taken off and trust me, it's much better to catch anything BEFORE.  Make sure you go every year, it's really important.
