found out insurance is changing - should i be concerned?

i found out today that our medical insurance is changing. new company (currently have uhc). i work for a very big school district, so i am pretty sure that it will be another major network.

i wouldn't care about this is if i wasn't 4 months pg. we just got our payment schedule for my ob yesterday. my fear is that there will be a change in coverage that may affect my checkups/delivery/etc.

my ob is dr. bobo, but i also see dr. kirshon at hpa. i'm planning to deliver at st. lukes/tch, and if needed there's the nicu at tch.

i put in a call to benefits to see if they'll go ahead and tell me what company so i can find out about coverage. should i be concerned?

  • It really depends on how they do the switch.

DH's company did a switch in August and they made sure the benefits with the new company were the exact same as the previous company.     Since our year runs with the calendar year (Jan to Dec) the new company agreed to give us credit for any deductibles paid to the old insurance company prior to the switch.

So far, I've had no problems with the switch as all my doctors take the new insurance company.

  • Our insurance switched during both of my pregnancies. The first time our benefits and deductible remained the same ($500 and 80/20) and it wasn't a big deal.

The second time our deductible tripled, but was still paid at 80/20. That sucked pretty hard because I had already paid our $500 deductible and then had to come up with another $1000 in like 3 months. All of our other benefits remained the same as far as how u/s were covered and co-pays etc.  It was a hot mess, but it all worked out in the end.

  • I'd be a little concerned.... but there's really no way to know until you see the details of the new plan. Hopefully it doesn't change much!
