(@) night terrors...and my haunted house??

So...DS apparently had his first horrible bout with night terrors tonight.  He went to bed at around 8:30 and woke up at 10 screaming like something out of the exorcist.  Thirty unresponsive, blood curdling screaming minutes later we were so freaked out that we packed him up and ran for the nearest night clinic.  They checked him out and confirmed that everything was okay and the guy who took his vitals recommended, on our list of to do's, that we "look into the history of the house" and the possibility of "spirit activity".  Per his advice, there are "prayers that can be said" to deal with them if it's an issue.

I'm somewhere between amused and traumatized by this.

In any event, DS seems to be fine now.  One is really early for night terrors, but apparently not too early. :/

  • I am so sorry you are going through this.

Devyn had these when he was just over 1 as well. It lasted a few month and did not happen every night but periodically. It is scary and you feel so helpless but they really don't know they are doing this.

The best you can do is to just hold him until it is over. Don't try to wake him, it makes it confusing and frightening to them if they wake up and have no idea what's going on.

Devyn's episodes I think always lasted somewhere around 20 minutes but I know that some are longer, some shorter.

    They WILL end!   *Hugs*

As far as the guy is concerned with his haunted story .. that is kind of freaky. So weird.

  • WTH, creepy clinic tech?!?  I think that's really unprofessional and could be really offensive to some.  At minimum,  it's incredibly odd to say to someone you don't know.

Sorry to hear about the terrors...Bobby had this a few times and, although unnerving, it seems they don't even know it's going on.

  • I can't believe the tech told you that! Hopefully that's the last time that happens to him.
  • That must have been terrifying for all of you Sad I am glad he wasn't sick or anything, but still.

And yeah...spirit activity? Putting all feelings about whether or not that exists aside, that doesn't seem like the kind of thing a med tech should be dispensing advice about!

  • Oh no!  Poor baby, and poor parents.  It must have been really scary for you guys!

I think it is a little strange that the person at the clinic mentioned "spirit activity."  That is a pretty far leap for one instance of night terrors.  I wouldn't be calling TAPS quite yet!

I was thinking the same thing!

Sorry that you guys had to deal with this.  Hopefully the episodes are few and far between and he grows out of them soon.

  • WHOA. I would have been freaked. We have never had them in our house, but one of my good friend experienced these with her daughter. She said it was very chilling. She had them on a regular basis, growing out of them around 4 or 5 finally.

I am LOLing about his comments!!

  • scary - I'm glad it was nothing.

We had a very brief bout of night terrors around 16ish months.  It only last a few days but it was freaky.

what a weirdo at the clinic.

  • Thanks, ladies.  Hopefully this doesn't happen often at all - it was completely terrifying.  Like something out of that crazy "Born Schizophrenic" documentary.

And yeah - the "spirit activity" advice was really creepy.  Wtf?  Don't tell me we might have ghosts.  Really.  Not.  Cool.

honestly, I'd call the clinic to tell them what that guy said.  That could really set some people off

Meh.  He was otherwise really great with DS.  And TBH it provided some (unintentional) comic relief in an otherwise terrifying night.  I was seriously trying to keep from laughing while he kept prying into the "history of our home" and whether we knew what's gone on there in the past.  Total weirdo - but I don't want to screw the guy over by reporting him.  Think I'll just chalk it up to him being really...um...spiritual.

Between this and the flat-out-wrong and horrible medical advice a friend of mine w/ mastitis got at the urgent care (Righttime) clinic by my house, I just made the decision to NEVER go to one of those places.

  • I hope your DS sleeps better, but wow, I'm appalled that the guy said that.  It's funny but at the same time absolutely crazy that someone at a medical clinic would say that to a patient.
