Is it rude to drive with fog lights on?

I had my fog lights on tonight because it was raining, dark & opening day of deer season (rural area) and I got honks and bright lights from a bunch of people. It was mostly truckers though which caught me off guard. I know it wasn't foggy but I felt like I needed the extra light given the conditions and obviously couldn't use my brights.

Opinion?

  • I don't think its rude. I do it all the time when I drive rural roads around here and especially when I'm back home.

  • I think it depends on the car, but sometimes they can be just as bright as your brights.  I think the difference is just how they are aimed.  I know the fog lights on my Jeep are super bright, so if I ever use them I turn them off for oncoming cars.

Agreed. If people were honking I'd assume your lights were too bright.

  •  I was wondering the same thing, I found them on my Jeep recently and it really helped me see better at night!

  • Are your lights aimed really high?  It's weird that the truckers were the ones being blinded.  Next time you take your car in for service, you might consider asking them to adjust them so you get the benefit of more light, but without blinding the people who are sitting up so high in their trucks.

I checked them and they are pointed straight out and I drive a mustang so the fog lights are low to the ground. Maybe it's like others have said and it's just too bright with the added lights.

I don't think its rude.  But maybe it is too bright with the added lights.

  • Maybe it wasn't so much them being blinded but they couldn't actually see the road with your fog lights. Light reflects better over the surface of the road when it is wet. Maybe your lights reflected in the water of the road and they had a hard time figuring out where the road was going, or something. I know I've experienced that a couple of times. Just a thought, if any of that makes sense.
