DH and I are hiking Half Dome on Friday...any suggestions?
DH and I are hiking Half Dome Friday...we have our permits and are planning on getting to the trail head at 5:30am. We are staying in El Portal Thurs and Fri nights.
We are bringing our camel backs and as much add'l water as they will carry...buying gloves today...we have been doing lots of hikes all summer training for this...
Any advice or suggestions from those who have done it?
TIA!

Re: DH and I are hiking Half Dome on Friday...any suggestions?
oh, and any recommendations re: food are welcome--we are planning on packing lots of clif bars, power bars, and gu's...and a sandwich for the top...
I always bring a couple of extra socks. Nothing like a new pair of socks (I actually wear two pairs of socks when I hike) when you get to the top for your way down.
Do you have poles? If not, I would also recommend renting/buying them.
For safety as well I always recommend people coming down the John Muir trail versus mist trail. Coming down those steps while you're tired, it's wet and crowded always scares me. John Muir is a little longer (I believe) but I just feel safer doing it that way.
Bring a camera - you don't want to miss out on taking some amazing pictures!
Have fun! I've done it a couple of times and am actually hiking half dome again in two weeks.
Sorry! Double posted.
I agree with Rori, take the JM trail coming down. It's a lot of switchbacks, but SO much better.
I've always found that a piece of fresh fruit helps out. I always bring some cut up apples or something to snack on since it's refreshing.
Also, when going down the cables, it's smart to go backwards instead of facing down the slope. It helps calm nerves and keep better traction and control.
Have fun!!

thank you all for the advice and support!! We will for sure take the JM trail down, and bring extra socks/fruit
We are definitely going to be safe...we have vowed to each other that we wouldn't go up the cables if the weather was at all inclement. We can always hike it another time, and the risk is just not worth it.
I'll let you all know how it goes!
another vote for taking the JM trail back down. h and i went to YNP about 10 years ago and we hiked to the top of Nevada Falls and were incorrectly told which way the JM trail was and ended up doing the Mist trail w/ all of those rocky switchbacks - NEVER AGAIN if we can avoid it. on the way back down, we went the JM trail and found it much better
i'm jealous that you get to climb half dome .. i'll get there .. someday
