Gift idea for 16 year old girl? -long-
To make a long family drama filled story short- I have an older half brother that has been in and out of my life since I was a baby. He has a 16 year old daughter that lives with her mother. Due to the fact that my brother was in and out of the picture and his daughter, my niece, lived with her mother my family has had very little contact with my niece throughout her life. I last saw her when she was about 11.
My dad (her grandfather) recently got in touch with her and we tentatively have plans next Friday night. Her birthday was Sept 3 and my dad's birthday is next Friday so if all goes according to plan I'm having a little cake and ice-cream gtg at my house for them.
I want to get her something but not knowing her I have no idea what to get. I don't want it to be some grand gesture of "I'm sorry this side of the family sucks and we've never been in your life" but I don't want it to seem like I didn't put any thought into it either. Maybe I'm over thinking this. I'm just so excited to hopefully open the door to actually being family to her. I want to be a cool aunt.
Any ideas?

Being that you don't know her very well it's hard to have it not be very generic. The first things that popped into my head were an i tunes GC, pedicure GC, if she lives by the beach maybe a cute beach bag with some stuff thrown in it...not really sure what that stuff would be. lol
I'll think some more.
ETA: Can you ask your brother?
Ahhh. Ok. Yeah, I think a GC would be the best choice then. She'll love it and then like you said, maybe it will give you guys a chance to spend more time together.
Do not try to buy a 16 year old girl anything but a gift card or give money. I speak from experience. We are at the age where we do not know what is cool anymore. Or maybe that's just me.
I hope you can get to know her better and be a cool aunt.

lol. I was joking. I have no idea was 16 yr olds are doing these days either. That makes me feel old.
