We are actually staying in Kihei and we will be there for 10 days!!!! The wedding is in Wailea but we didnt want to pay the Wailea prices for accommodations! lol!

Recs would be awesome! I've never been to Hawaii so I am very excited!!!

  • First you should really try to get a copy of the book Maui Revealed. It's really awesome. Look at the library, or try to buy one. It's worth it. It will tell you about every beach, all the good snorkel spots, many restauarants, etc. I think the one cool thing you have going for you is that Sept/Oct are supposed to be two of the slowest months in Maui.

We stayed in Kihei too, and we love it there. BTW, Kihei is right by Wailea.....you won't be very far away. Like 5, maybe 10 min drive, only because people drive really slow there and speed limits are low. You will learn to embrace that though, after a few days. We started to love how low-key driving was there. People just drive at their own pace and everyone goes with it. No roadrage, no crazies....it was awesome. We instantly started having anxiety about driving when we saw the clusterfvck at seatac airport when we flew back in.

Ok. Food Recs: Alexanders on Kihei Road has best fish and chips ever. Kihei Caffe is supposed to be the best breakfast on the island and it was delicious! But we didn't try the island favorites like Banana Macnut pancakes....but they looked super delicious. We also ate at Captain Jacks in Lahaina which was yummy. But we tried to stay with middle of the road prices. Lahaina is a really fun town and totally worth spending a night walking around in. Oh, also, Lahaina Mai Tai Lounge has been voted best Mai Tai for about 4 years....and it definitely did not disappoint, but it's pricey. However, it's an awesome little restaurant. We didn't get food there, just mai tais, but it's right on the water and is open air, so it was totally awesome.

Best Snorkel spots. We swam with sea turtles off the left of Makena Beach and also at Black Rock we swam with a fam of 4 sea turtles. We went to a TON of snorkel spots, but those were really great. We also paid $60 for the week for us both to get the top of the line snorkels (mine with eye correction) from Boss Frogs. At first I was like, this isn't worth it, we will prob only snorkel like once or twice...but we snorkeled every day, usually at a few spots. The snorkel rental I think was our best purchase ever.

If you plan to go to the blowhole, be cautious around the actual hole. We went, and it was awesome. But a few days before we were there, I guess a man got too close to it or something, and was sucked through the hole. It was in the newspaper and everything.

I think that's it. Anything else you wanna know?

  • I also honeymooned in Maui (back in May).  My favorite restaurants were:

Aloha Mixed Plate in Lahaina http://www.alohamixedplate.com/  It's 100% outdoor seating, and 2 sections.  You can order alcohol in the section on the patio, but not in the section closest to the beach (because of wacky Maui liquor laws).  The food is cheap, but oh-so-good!  DH and I ate here twice while on vacay.  The service was great too.

If you and your DH like beer, do yourselves a favor and go to the Maui Brewing Company's Brewpub: http://www.mauibrewingco.com/mbc/MBCBrewPub.html    DH and I went here 3 times, there was a good rotation of taps, and we were able to drink all kinds of Maui Brew beers that are not available on the main land.  We are beer snobs, and we were very happy with what we drank!  DH still mopes about a few of those brews that he can't drink here.  The people in Maui Revealed didn't give it good reviews, but those people seem a bit like wino-snob-yuppies and probably don't appreciate good beer, imo.

Fred's Mexican Cafe http://www.fredsmexicancafe.com/home.html  It is right in Kihei so it will be close to you.  We really liked the fish tacos, and it's a fun place to hang out.  It's a chain, but it was our kind of low-key place we prefer.

The Road to Hana is great to do, but we spent about 11 hours so it was a long day.  The Maui Revealed book is great for figuring out the best places to stop along the way.

    Enjoy your vacation!

  • You girls are awesome!! Thanks for the recs!! I will definitely have to check them out!

mgoss: The Brewing company is one of our must visit places there. My husband likes the bikini blonde (gets it at met market) and we are excited to try all the other ones on tap. Did you eat there? Trying to decide if we should just drink there or do a meal as well!

I did get the Maui Revealed book. I have heard so many great things about it! I really hope to see turtles! EEEE!!!!

Today is my last day at work for two weeks and I am worthless! lol!

The food at the Brewpub is good, not high-end by any means, but good (and not too expensive, compared to a lot of Maui restaurants).  With all the delicious beers to drink, having some food while you are there is a good idea!  The food is a fusion of Hawaiian and typical Pub food.
