How to Get Raid of Fruit Flies?

I have been noticing a lot of fruit flies in the house. I don't know where they are coming from. We don't have any fruit or vegetables out in the open. How do I get raid of them?

  • Put vinegar in a cup, and cover with plastic wrap. Use a knife to make several holes in the wrap, and they'll fly in.

  • I do the same as PP, but with red wine.  My fruit flies never fall for the vinegar.  Out here in Kentucky they want the good stuff!
  • I am so glad someone posted this.  We have had problems with fruit flies for the last few weeks.  I hope these ideas work!

  • RoxBride is right...when I had them (so sick) I did that and I also added a ripe banana (peeled) to help attract them.  It worked great, so long as you have a bit of patience that is.

We're going to have to try this one, vinegar hasn't been working for us either!!

  • The red wine worked like a charm!!!  At first it just seemed like the flies were just hanging out around the cup.  But I emptied it today and was shocked at how many flies were in the bottom!

  • Yay!  So glad it worked.  Our flies have good taste.  Cool
  • If you're almost out of jam/jelly, you can also poke holes in the jar lid and add water to the jam/jelly and mix it around a bit with a spoon. It'll attract flies of all sizes, and it's always been really quick for us.

  • and check your plants. they're a source of fruit flies. If you've purchased a new one, re-potted or accidentally overwatered, you're likely to get them. I went through the same thing and tried for ever to find the source. It was a mini rose plant my Mom had bought me.
  • I am going to try this.  Thanks

  • So glad someone asked this.  I'm going to try the vinegar trick.  We have had a huge problem with them in our kitchen lately.  I've gotten pretty good at hitting them with a magazine but they just don't seem to die off.  So frustrating!
