Curly Haired Ladies...

My hair has a natural wave/curl - but I have to work at it.  I bought some Aveda - Be Curly and would love to be able to make the curly hair work but am at a loss as to the "process".  So - what's your process?  Wash, add product - diffuse?  Thanks!

Re: Curly Haired Ladies...

  • I have curly hair, I've tried various products but I've found a leave in conditioner & mousse works best for me.

I use a dime sized amount of Redken Butter Treat or All Soft & some mousse. After I've put the products in I scrunch all over & then fluff the roots by turning my head upside down & massaging. I usually air dry. (or diffuse until my hair is 50% dry.)

Hope that makes sense, it's harder to describe than I thought.

  • I have curly hair so I don't really have to work at it, but I comb my hair out in the shower with conditioner and then when I get out I towel dry/scrunch then put in product and air dry. I think my hair is best when I don't touch it much and let it air dry vs scrunch/diffuse.  But if you're trying to bring curl out then you'll definitely probably want to diffuse while scrunching.

  • I use the Be Curly and Suave mousse. I dry on low heat/low speed with a diffuser. My stylist told me to keep my fingers away from my hair. Just use the diffuser. I also blowdry until about 75% dry with my head flipped over.

  • I have naturally curly hair and use Mixed Chicks, which I originally got for my DD, I use it on her curls too.  I shampoo only 2-3 times a week and condition daily, pat dry and then use their leave in conditioner, I never blow dry, I always air dry.  I love that it's not heavy and does not weigh down my hair. GL!

  • Mine is naturally wavy/curly. When I get out of the shower I comb it with a wide-toothed comb, apply lots of mousse and then hair spray. I also pull my bangs back and poof them up, then pin with bobby pins. (I forget what that's called). Anyway, it seems to help my curls because my hair is too thick if I leave it all down. I don't defuse at all, I love that it only takes me about 5 minutes to do my hair!

  • Bare with me as I am on my phone...out of the shower I pat dry with towel, comb with wide tooth, put in a curl conditioner (tresseme), follow with gel - I finish getting ready and then I dry upside down just to fluff. My hair isn't thick enough to keep the "wet" look. I always have spray gel on hand I'd I have a frizzy area that needs tamed.
  • I do a method similar to a lot of the girls on here, except that I use products free of cones (silicones, etc...) and sulfates as they produce build-up in your hair and tend to cause dryness, which is not good for curly hair. Also, I only shampoo 2-3 times/week. On the days I don't shampoo I usually rock the second day hair or do a co-wash (washing with conditioner). This is all based on the curly girl method. My hair has seriously done amazing things since switching to this method!

I usually just let my hair air-dry, but if I want extra volume and more defined curls, I diffuse on a low with low heat.

I currently use Giovanni Mousse, Simply Organic Defrizzing Cream, and Set it Free Finishing Spray by Deva Curl.

  • I have naturally wavy hair but the length and weight of my hair pulls most of the wave out so I get wave perm every 2 years or so to help my hair hold my natural wave.  Then I use a curl friendly shampoo and conditioner, then I towel dry, add some wavy defining mousse to my wet hair and then diffuse it to dry.  It works pretty well for a loose wavy look, if you want real "curls" I think you would have to do more for it to hold all day.

Pretty much exactly. I don't do much towel drying. I add my leave-in conditioner and mousse and then wrap in a towel for a few minutes. Then I don't touch it. If I don't want to air dry, I used a diffuser but again, don't work too much, just scrunch hair with the diffuser and hold to your head, not much fluffing or you get frizz.
