I know there's someone on here that's adopted, but I can't remember who it is. Sorry.
I wanted to ask you some questions, if you don't mind. It mostly has to do with using the proper terminology & wording things the right way. A friend of mine will be adopting a baby mid November. She has IF issues that she's been trying to figure out for at least 3 years now. Understandably, she is very sensitive about this topic.
I want to ask her about this new baby & congratulate them, but am afraid of upsetting her by asking something that may be none of my business.
Any advise or touchy things I should avoid?
Re: Adoption ?
Are you close enough friends that you can say, "Hey, I want to ask and congratulate you about the baby, but I'm a moron and will probably say all of the wrong things." I find that when people are upfront with their sincerity and also ignorance on a topic, all stupid things that come from their mouth are forgiven.
I would also just treat this baby like any vag baby - send a gift, card full of congratulations and lots of support.
There are things people say to me about being pg & I want to punch them in the teeth sometimes. Especially when they know about my m/cs.
I figured this might be the same sort of thing.
My mom mentioned that it's common to have the shower after they take home the baby, for fear that the birth mom might change her mind. Is it inappropriate then, to get her a gift beforehand?
My sister's best friend just adopted in June. Before her little girl arrived, everyone treated it like any other "pregnancy". General baby talk... We would tell her how she's going to be an awesome mother. We would steer away for the adoption questions like "why are they giving her up for adoption" "how is the biological mom", stuff like that. I know she was hesitant on having a baby shower beforehand, but they ended up throwing her one anyway. She got LOTS of stuff (which is nice since adoption isn't cheap).
If she's not having a shower til after the baby arrives, then I would probably wait.
I think i'm rambling...sorry if i'm all over the place!
