Tips on a lunch interview?

I had a couple phone interviews back a while ago with a specific company...those positions ended up falling through due to loss of funding.  I got a call out of the blue from them yesterday saying they had an unexpected resignation, and can I come in Monday for a research/writing exercise and a lunch interview.

I'm really excited about this position and would really like it, so any tips to help me ace this interview?  What should I expect in terms of questions and such?  How should I prepare?  I don't know the restaurant where we'll be going.

Re: Tips on a lunch interview?

  • You should treat the lunch interview as you would an office interview. So despite the restaurant, even if its Applebees or Panera, wear a suit. Always be yourself and bring hard copies of your resume. I would google "sample interview questions" to get an idea of what to expect

Good luck! Hope you land it!

  • I had a lunch interview a few months ago and did a ton of research on it. Here's what I gathered from various business etiquette sites (this is all specific to lunch interviews, the eating and ordering part; obviously treat the "interview" part of it normally. For me and I assume for you as well, that's not the part that's stressing you out!).

Order something easy to eat (something you can eat with a fork and knife) and moderately priced (not the most expensive thing on the menu). Stay away from pastas, anything with a lot of sauce that you may accidentally spill on your suit, sandwiches, etc. Chicken dishes and salads are a good choice. If you don't finish everything (and you probably won't since you'll be talking a lot), do not take home leftovers. For a drink, don't get a soda -- stick with water, iced tea, or sparkling water.

If you are interested in appetizers or desserts, follow the interviewer's lead. If he/she orders them, it's a signal that it's alright for you to order one, as well. If they offer to let you order first, just say you need more time. This is a good way to gauge an acceptable price point if you're wondering if the entree you're interested in is priced too high. (At my interview, the main interviewer was excellent about taking the lead on ordering first.)

The interviewer will be picking up the check. Don't even offer to pay. They invited you to lunch, they are expecting to pay. Do, of course, thank them both at the interview and again later for both the meal and the opportunity.

I found my lunch interview much less formal than the first interview. We did get to some of the more "form" questions, but it was mostly just a conversation. And no one had their pens out. Keep in mind that you may not have access to your notes, or it may be awkward for you to pull them out, so if you have something you want to make sure you mention just try your best to remember to bring it up. You can always bring it up in the TY note if you forget to mention it at the interview. I did bring copies of my resume and reference list to the interview, and handed them out as we were leaving (at the interviewer's request).

Finally, if you are rusty on dining etiquette (who gets which glass, where to place your napkin if you leave the table, etc.), you may want to Google some information just to brush up.

Good luck! I loved my lunch interview. I found they were more candid than the first interview and we just had a good time.
