after my shower head leaked onto the tile in the bathroom and outside the bathroom and onto the carpeting, the carpet wreaked. as i was doing everything to dry it - fans, dehumidifiers - my cat decided for some reason she needed to start peeing there. then really stunk.
i decided to pull up the carpet and lay new flooring. this has been a two week project (partly due to my surgery). i had to pull up the carpet, pull up the carpet tack and staples, and then sand the subfloor and apply primer in case any cat urine had seeped into the subfloor.
i still have to put new baseboard and shoe molding in (i pulled the existing down and want to put new stuff up) but here's a pic:

and the best part is, it's NOT WOOD. i know what you're thinking - ugh. i know, i know, i love wood, too. but really it would have been stupid of me to put wood down if my cat decided to go there again. the urine seeps into the wood and you just can't get it out. this is a water resistant vinyl that i found at HD for $1.59 a square foot. and it actually looks really good! i'm pretty darn impressed. it was also easy to install! i'll probably put in in our bedroom, too. the best part is it sticks to itself not the floor so when we do decide to replace it with wood (when our cat dies and also when we have more money) it will be super easy to pull up. i'm pretty happy with it especially because it only cost me about $40!
Re: new flooring - proud of me :-)
That looks great! Good job!
I for one have no problem with the fake wood. In our "final" house that's probably what we'll have since it holds up better to the cat claws. I just love the look of wood, whether it's wood or not...and the fact that it's not carpet.
prepping the floor was harder... but because it's vinyl i just had to score and break the planks versus sawing. i am a little concerned about doing the baseboard. here is the flooring i used:

i would be very nervous to do anything else on my own. mostly because i'm scared of power tools.
