Taking off first day...

I recently got picked to be a part of the college volunteer program at a children's hospital nearby. I went to orientation this week and my first day for training is supposed to be this Friday. At orientation they told us we are allowed to miss 2 days of "work" during the semester (we have to meet a 25 hour volunteering minimum for the semester in order for our volunteering experience to count). Anyways, my sister is being induced Friday morning and I HAVE to be there. It's her first baby, it's been a really hard pregnancy for her, and she's asked me to be in the delivery room for support.

How would you handle this? I want to come off looking professional and I am so excited to have the opportunity to volunteer. They told us there is no excused/unexcused absences, but shouldn't I still call and let them know I won't be there?

Re: Taking off first day...

  • I would think a Children's Hospital would understand this predicament more than any other program. In the grand scheme of things, moments like your sister's first baby are things you'll remember forever and are too important to give up. I would talk to your volunteer coordinator as soon as possible and explain the situation, especially since it's the first day. Won't it just be one of your two missed worked days? Good luck!
  • Thanks for the advice! They did understand and didn't have a problem with it at all. BTW- being there at the hospital for my nephew's birth was so amazing! Big Smile
