Re: Poll: The largest city near you
2. What do you LOVE about your city? It's the greatest city in the World. The culture, the food, the stores, etc.3. What do you HATE about your city? Hate that it's so expensive, that it's so congested sometimes and sometimes I hate all the tourists especially when I lived there (I know it's a big deal to you to be at Bloomingdales! in NYC! but this is just my local store and I just need some clothes, MOVE).4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? See Central Park5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? Yes, lots. For Football, I'm kind of more a Jets fan than Giants. Also more a Mets fan than Yankees. 6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? This is so hard. I'll say Atlanta just b/c we have family there. Or Boston, b/c we have family in New England too, and it's not too different than NY whereas GA would be a big change!
1. What is your city? Detroit
2. What do you LOVE about your city? The casinos, food, sports, and hardworking people.
3. What do you HATE about your city? The poor perception of the city, and how every show set here or that talks about Detroit has to make it seem like every single inch of Detroit is destitute. Of course, I honestly wish things would turn around and Detroit could be a really great city again (in terms of schools, government, etc.).
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? Go to a major sporting event, hit the casinos, and get some local food in either Greektown or at Lafayette Coney Island or National Coney Island.
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? Obviously we have all the major teams, and I root for them all, but mostly the Tigers (baseball) and Red Wings (hockey.) We are huge hockey fans.
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? I think I would choose Orlando, Nashville, Toronto, or Chicago. All great cities!2. What do you LOVE about your city? Museums, Architecture, Sports Teams, Cleanliness, Diversity, Shopping
3. What do you HATE about your city? Winters in Chicago are THE WORST and seem to last forever!
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? River Architecture Tour, and visit some of the museums.
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? Chicago Cubs, Bears and Bulls. Not a White Sox fan or Blackhawks fan...even though everyone has hopped on the hockey bandwagon.
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why?
Honestly, I don't think I will ever leave the Chicago area, but if I had to live somewhere else it would probably be another fairly large city with a little bit warmer weather. Maybe I will move to Phoenix from November to March.
1. What is your city? Des Moines
2. What do you LOVE about your city? The people, the food, the low crime rates, the amazing parks and recreation opportunities, our library system, the schools, the farmers' markets, the closeness to small town Iowa, it's central location
3. What do you HATE about your city? The cold winters and lack of things to do during the cold winters.
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? Walk around Gray's Lake or canoe on the lake then head downtown and enjoy margaritas and fresh guac Dos Rios.
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? We have farmers' teams in baseball, hockey, basketball, and football. We occasionally go to a few games a year.
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? Denver, Colorado -- it's just pretty much awesome. The mountains, the outdoor activities, the food, the weather.
Neena Mae. 1/7/10
"A baby nursing at a mother's breast is an undeniable affirmation of our rootedness in nature." - David Suzuki
I went to Detroit a couple of years ago, and had a great time. Sure parts of it weren't the greatest...but what big city doesn't have areas like that. Personally I found it a lot better than St. Louis, which I've never been a fan of. No offense to anyone that is from St. Louis.
That's the truth! There are so many great parts of the city that are overlooked in favor of the more sensationalized perspective of the plight of Detroit.
And as for St. Louis... poor JusLyn and I had the misfortune of having the ladies we were traveling with get held up at gunpoint for their purses when I was visiting there this summer. Up til then, I was all like, "I'm from Detroit, I can handle ANY major downtown area." Then I crapped my pants.
*However*, other than that incident, the city treated us nicely and we had a great time and experienced some great food, bars and fun. Unfortunately, the few bad apples ruin the bunch in some cases.
1. What is your city? Minneapolis/St. Paul
2. What do you LOVE about your city? lots of outdoor activities-nature trails, free zoos, beautiful summers
3. What do you HATE about your city? SNOW and way too much of it
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? go to the Mall of America
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? Vikings, Twins, T-Wolves, Wild... they all suck
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? Research Triangle in NC (Raleigh mainly...I miss it)1. What is your city? Kalamazoo (Yes, there really is a Kalamazoo
)
2. What do you LOVE about your city? Love our downtown area, safe, good schools, college town
3. What do you HATE about your city? Not very diverse in our suburb but not too much, sometimes it feels very small.
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? Hit up the Kalamazoo Mall, a fun older walking mall downtown with little local shops. Also hitting up some of the very yummy food downtown.
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? Nope we cheer on Detroit teams (3.5hrs away) but Chicago is also 3.5hrs away
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? Not sure, I am such a homebody it is hard for me to imagine my life any where else. Chicago seems like such a fun place with a younger crowd.1. What is your city? San Francisco
2. What do you LOVE about your city? There is a lot of culture and museums, and the ocean of course.
3. What do you HATE about your city? It's a pain to drive into SF. There is always traffic.
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? Drive over the Golden Gate Bridge
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? 49ers and Giants. I actually root for the other bay area teams...Oakland A's and Raiders.
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? Sacramento is about as close as SF, and I would prefer to live there over SF (if I actually lived in one of them.) Sac has more trees, the river and closer to Tahoe. It's less 'city' than SF, which is more my style.1. What is your city? Washington, DC
2. What do you LOVE about your city? The history, museums, culture, having some of the most gorgeous scenic landmarks and areas in my backyard! Not to mention, love me some Georgetown!
3. What do you HATE about your city? Traffic and congestion, crime rate
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? Wow, there is so much to do! I would definitely say visiting The Mall (and all of the Memorials) and going to the Smithosonian are pretty awesome!
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? Yes, the Redskins, Nationals, Capitals, Wizards, DC United. The only team I actually root for are the Redskins..love!
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? I would probably choose Boston. DH is from Rhode Island, and I know he would love to move back North one day.
1. What is your city? Charleston, WV - Even though I don't really think most of you would consider it a major city.
2. What do you LOVE about your city? The people, the small town feel, the crime rate.
3. What do you HATE about your city? We don't really have a lot to offer.
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? I'd tell them about some good local restaurants and I'm not really sure what else. Maybe go to the state forest? Most of the things I love in our area aren't in the city.
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? We have a minor league baseball team but that's it. Most people cheer for the college and high school teams.
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? My dad lives in Cincy and we like it there, but I think we'd be a better fit in Carolinas closer to DH's family.
2. What do you LOVE about your city? I love the college town feel. It can feel like a big city if you want it to or a small town if you would rather.
3. What do you HATE about your city? I can't think of much at the moment.
I guess maybe the traffic that the students bring, but even that isn't so bad. I also dislike the winter.
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? There are a bunch of local restaurants I would suggest (ie Shakespeares pizza = bomb.com). If someone were to come during football season - I would suggest tailgating and going to a Mizzou football game.
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? The University of Missouri. The pro teams are in KC and Stl.
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? Austin, TX fo sho.
1. What is your city? Spokane, WA I'm not sure if it qualifies as a large city or metro area, but it is the largest city in the area.
2. What do you LOVE about your city? Spokane is split into 3 very distinct areas (Northside, Valley, and South Hill) which makes it feel like a much smaller city than it is. There is also a lot to do no matter what season it is.
3. What do you HATE about your city? People can have a bad attitude about living here because it's "not as good as Seattle."
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? Hmmm...that's a good question...maybe Chelsea will have a better answer for this one!
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? We have a AAA baseball team and an arena football team. We don't really follow either one of them.
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? That's a tough one. Sam and I really don't want to live in a large city...I guess I would say Omaha or St. Louis area, so that we could be close to one of our families.
1. What is your city? H-town!
2. What do you LOVE about your city? There's so much stuff to do
3. What do you HATE about your city? You might get shot while you're doing it! I kid, I kid... sort of. Houston's a place where you don't want to get turned around because you might just end up in fifth ward in a situation you don't need to be in. And it's pretty dirty. We'd rather live near Dallas.
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? Go have Italian food at D'Amico's, go shopping in the Galleria, and visit NASA. OH and see an opera at Houston Grand Opera. (I guess that's four things.)
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? Yes- the Texans and the Astros. I'm not a sports person.
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? Dallas. It's a lot cleaner than Houston and is still big enough to have a ton of restaurants and things to do. And for other less PC reasons. Or Austin, which is the most awesome place ever to visit.
And actually, when we make a move we'll probably go to a rural area near Tyler, TX. Tyler is pretty small in the grand scheme of things, but we'd love to live on a lot of land in the middle of nowhere.
1. What is your city? The ATL
2. What do you LOVE about your city? It's a "little big city" with lots of southern hospitality. It's big enough to have great amenities, but its small enough to actually know people and network. I also love that it is really diverse with lots of different cultures that all mesh together. I also love that compared to other cities it's not as driven by social class or race. No matter your color or class, you can actually succeed here compared to other cities I've lived in/near.
3. What do you HATE about your city? The Urban sprawl. I really hate all the outlying suburbs. we live in one ( which I hate) but it costs so much more to live in the city and until recently we couldn't afford it. Now that we can it doesn't seem as appealing since I no longer work in the city. The sprawl also makes traffic a beast.
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do?I really depends on the person- but there is something for everyone... shopping, the aquarium, history tours for people that like that, hiking Stone Mountain in the morning for an outdoorsy person.
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any?yes we have several and they are all heartbreakers- The Braves( MLB), Falcons(NFL), Hawks(NBA), The Dream(WNBA) and we used to have the Thrashers. I root for all the home teams but I am truly a Falcons Fan ( and a happy one this morning). The Braves always let me down.
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why?
First on our list is Ft. Lauderdale/Miami or Tampa/Orlando. I think I'm a FL girl at heart. Next would be Houston/Sugarland or Dallas
2. What do you LOVE about your city? Our news is national/worldwide news. Very powerful city with historical significance. I also love that we have a "go-to" way to entertain guests (let's tour DC! lol).
3. What do you HATE about your city? Traffic, over-population and high COL.
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? Visit the Mall and as many monuments as you can. Try to find time for the Air and Space Museum and Smithsonian Museum of Natural History as well.
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? Redskins, Wizards, Capitals - I don't root for any of them, but I do root for my college bball team (GMU), which I guess you could consider a city sporting team.
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? Denver - It's gorgeous, lots of outside activities, fairly easy access to East and West coasts. Atlanta - Fun city, diverse metro area, decent jobs. It's also close to all of my relatives in Florida.1. What is your city? Nashville
2. What do you LOVE about your city? It still has a small town feel, but also has the benefits of a large city. We get great plays/musicals/concerts/festivals. There is always something going on.
3. What do you HATE about your city? The traffic is really brutal and this is coming from somebody who lived in DC. I also hate that I am over 7 hour from my parents, I wish we lived closer.
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? Go to Broadway and experience it and catch a concert at the Ryman.
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? We have a minor league baseball team, NHL hockey and NFL football. I root for the hockey team (season tickets), but I don't really care for NFL football. I'll watch the games, just to keep up with what happens. It's a good talking point with middle and high school boys.
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? Realistically? St. Louis. It would be 3 hours from my mom and dad's house and 3 hours from his parent's house. Unrealistically? DC or Montreal in Canada.
1. What is your city? Cleveland
2. What do you LOVE about your city? There are tons of restaurants--and I really hope we can try most of them one day. And next year, both a casino and an aquarium are set to open, so we're excited about that!
3. What do you HATE about your city? Cleveland could be a really awesome city, but there's some areas that really drag it down and give people a negative perception of it. Hopefully with the opening of the casino and aquarium, the job market will look better and that'll help things start to improve.
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? Visit Michael Symon's restaurants.
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? Yes, but I don't root for them. I'm not really into sports, period.
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? I love San Diego, but it's too damn expensive. I'd love to see Chicago one day...I think I could like it there.
1. What is your city? Columbus, Ohio
2. What do you LOVE about your city? I like the location of Columbus. We are very central and have easy access to most of the midwest. The cost of living is relatively low, and our accents are not as offensive as some of the rest of Ohio. There are great places to eat, drink and entertain.
3. What do you HATE about your city? Columbus is flat. There isn't much variety in scenery so you have to drive a bit to get to nice parks or other scenic areas. Once you get out of Columbus though it is nice. One thing I dislike is how large the metro area is. I have friends who live in Columbus and are 45 minutes to one hour away. Because of that there is a lot of division in neighborhoods. I mainly stick to the northwest side of town.
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? Columbus Zoo, COSI Science Museum, Ohio State Football game.... shop shop shop.
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? We have an NHL team, but my family are Red Wings fans. Mainly Columbus is a college sport town because of OSU
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? I would like to live in New Orleans. I know that the crime rate is high, its hot, its sticky, but it has such beautiful soul.
For the purposes of this poll, use the largest city near you.
1. What is your city? Washington DC
2. What do you LOVE about your city? It has so many great museums, lots of history, and just so many great sights to see.
3. What do you HATE about your city? The crime and traffic can be hellacious since everyone seems to commute there for work.
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? There are so many sights to see in DC it's hard to choose just one, but my favorite museum by far is the Holocaust museum.
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any?
We have the Nationals for baseball, the Wizards for basketball, and the Capitals for hockey. But, I root for the Washington Redskins for football, HAIL! The Capitals seem to be the only team in our area that can have a winning season though lol. For baseball our family roots for the Orioles and for basketball I have always been a die hard Lakers fan, my parents are from LA so it's only right ;-)
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? I guess if I wanted to live closer to my relatives I would chose Los Angeles because both of my parents' families live around there. But, DH and I have always talked about moving to North Carolina near the Charlotte area or to Florida near the Tampa area if we ever moved out of state. Neither of us have ever lived anywhere but Southern Maryland and both of our immediate families, so I doubt we are going anywhere.
2. What do you LOVE about your city? The weather!! Also, there is just so much to do. I can't remember the last time I ate at a chain restaurant.
3. What do you HATE about your city? It is so completely unwalkable / difficult to take public transportation anywhere. And the city is very spread out.
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? Hike the Hollywood sign, go to the beach.
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any?
Baseball - Angels and Dodgers. Basketball - Lakers and Clippers. Hockey - Kings and Ducks. We don't cheer for any, though. I stick to college teams, and DH likes the Michigan teams he was raised with.
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? I adore Charlotte. I would move there in 2 seconds flat. Also, I loved living in Chicago (but I hate the winters!)
2. What do you LOVE about your city? It's smack dab in the middle of the state, making it relatively easy to get to all other parts of the state without being in the car for too long.
3. What do you HATE about your city? Lack of eclectic dining options. It's coming along, but it's nothing compared to Detroit or Grand Rapids.
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? They should go to East Lansing and walk around MSU's beautiful campus. And if they are going to visit the Capitol building, they need to take me along because I've never been inside.
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? There is a minor-league baseball team that is the farm team to Toronto. Other than that, being so close to East Lansing and MSU, it's mostly a college town. And yes, I obvs root for Michigan State :-)
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? Top 3, in order, would be: Denver because of it's rich culture. Austin because I've heard amazing things about it. Philadelphia because of its history.
1. What is your city? Minneapolis/St.Paul (I live on the Mpls side of town)
2. What do you LOVE about your city? Beautiful summers, tons to do outside, MOA, lots of free stuff (museums, zoos), theater
3. What do you HATE about your city? The long, cold, snowy winter
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? I'd have them check out the great theaters and museums downtown and have some fun on the lakes. Everyone always wants to visit the MOA, but it's not really that exciting (although it's a great place to kill some time in the winter).
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? Yup. We have the Twins (MLB), Vikings (NFL), Wild (NHL), Timberwolves (NBA), Lynx (WNBA), some minor league teams (baseball, lacrosse, etc), and a bunch of college teams (the largest being the Golden Gophers). I like the Twins, Vikings, and Wild, although they all pretty much suck this year. It's a hard time to be a MN sports fan right now.
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? Ugh. I can't really imagine living anywhere else. If I had to choose, I think I'd pick Chicago because it's still pretty close to my family.
My Blog
1. What is your city? Boston
2. What do you LOVE about your city? The history, that it's small (for a big city) and you can walk pretty much anywhere, the sports teams
3. What do you HATE about your city? That everything is so expensive
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? Freedom Trail, visit Fenway
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? Absolutely! I practically live and breathe for the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, and Celtics
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? Hmmm. I don't know. I don't really have family in any other part of the country, but I've heard great things about Chicago and that it's pretty similar to Boston in a lot of ways. I like visiting NYC, but I'm not sure if I'd want to live there.
1. What is your city? Boston
2. What do you LOVE about your city? It is small enough that you can walk anywhere, the shopping, the restaurants
3. What do you HATE about your city? The MBTA. (public transportation). We are not friends right now.
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? Eat! Check out the North End, visit Faneuil Hall, take the Fenway tour, Walk down Newbury Street. Ok - that's more than one!
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? Oh Yeah! Sox, Pats, Celts and Bruins. We root for them all except the Pats -- don't ask!
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? I am not a city girl. I think I would want to live in an area like Burlington VT.1. What is your city? Boston for me too
2. What do you LOVE about your city? Like Beth said, it has a small feel for a big city, plus I love all of the history and the fact that it's a green city with parks & trees.
3. What do you HATE about your city? Finding parking at times, and that the T won't doesn't run as late as the bars are open (not as much of an issue these days, but still just doesn't make sense to me.)
4. If someone were to visit your city, what one thing would you tell them they should do? Duck tour, Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall & Fenway.
5. Does your city have sporting teams, and if so, which do you root for, if any? Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics & Patriots. I root for all of them, but really only follow baseball.
6. If you had to live in any other large city or metro area, which would you choose and why? DC- I love the museums, Georgetown & how walkable it is. I've also never done San Diego or Portland, but friends have told me that we'd love both places.
