So I was just lurking/reading on the natural childbirth board and it lead to a google search that has me really pissed off. While I was in labor, I asked my MW for something that would help me sleep. She told me she could give me Nubain, and that is was an antihistamine....it would enable me to sleep between contractions but wouldn't impact the baby at all. Yea.....not so much. Its an opiod, which not only CAN cross the placenta, is a class of drugs I have had adverse reactions to previously (hallucinations). I am really POed that it was not properly explained to me. I know, everything was OK in the end, but it still makes me made.

I had nubain too and it did nothing. If I would have known how far along I was I would not have gotten it. It was explained to me (not in as much depth as you just did) during a child birth class. It didn't do much for me and I wish I had not have gotten it.

I would be POed if I were you too. That is not right, she flat out lied to you. I always make sure my patients are well aware that Nubain affects the baby before they get it. Most of our patients turn it down when they find out that it affects the baby. It really only works well for patients in early labor. It's not usually helpful for anyone in active labor.

Is it possible that they actually gave you ambien and not nubain? I am wondering if in the moment you misheard or if over time your memory has changed. I was given Ambien and told the same explanation as you were, but it was about ambien, and not nubain.

I certainly hope so. Was the Ambien an injection? Did you get a woozy/light-headed feeling as soon as it was administered? I double checked with DH last night (who was not in transition at the time), and his memory is the same as mine. It did allow me to sleep in between contractions, and I flew from being 5-6cm at 7am when it was given to me to being 10cm at about 8:30am and delivered at 9:13....from what PP have said, Nubain wouldn't help that far along.

I already had a drip for pitocin so it went in through my IV. The only effect that it had was taking the edge off a little bit by actually calming me down. I hope it was just ambien!

Ambien is a sleeping pill taken by mouth. Nubain is given through the IV and makes most people feel like what you described above. It sounds like you were given Nubain. I don't think they would give a laboring patient Ambien unless they were a night time induction and wanting them to sleep all night.

Hmmm... It was definitely ambien. I have my release papers which shows everything they gave me. It was 3 in the am when they gave it to me and I delivered at 4:53. Maybe they did it through the IV because I was puking?

Request your records to find out for sure. I'm guessing it was Nubain.

First, I'm sorry that you even have to question what happened, that's awful.

I was given ambien in early labor to go on "medicated rest" because they tried to tell me I wasn't in labor-- this was the option they gave me when I refused to leave. (I delivered less than 10 hours later.) However, I don't remember if I took a pill or not.
