1: of, relating to, or arousing controversy <a controversial policy> <a controversial film> Examples: Abortion, politics.
Polls about Brad Pitt and public speaking are NOT controversial.

Well, my dear, in the link you just posted, the definition of "controversy" is "a discussion marked especially by the expression of opposing views." So any discussion in which people may express opposing opinions can be considered controversial.
We never claimed that these would be potentially heated controversial discussions.

also, I think the phrase you're looking for is "critically important for our continued existence" - if that's what you meant, then you're probably right. I'm not sure you understand the word "controversy" though, so I'll be sure to ignore any future 'advice' from you
