MacBook ladies...

Can you please share how you back up?

I bought a "My Passport" external drive but can't get it to format for Mac.

Do you have an external that you love that didn't cost an arm and a leg?

DH isn't comfortable with the cloud and wants something tangible and less public.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

Re: MacBook ladies...

  • I don't have a MacBook, but for my iMac I used to use an Iomega external hard drive, and I set up automatic backups with Time Machine.  Now we back up to a server.  I'm not sure how much you're looking to spend, but Iomega makes what they call 'Mac Companion' hard drives.

We use Seagate Free Agent Go for our external hard drives on our PC laptops, and I thought that they were pretty inexpensive compared to the Iomega.  They are compatible with Macs but I've never actually used them on a Mac so I don't know how well they interface with Time Machine.

  • I also have a MyPassport drive (I believe?) and it asked to format it the first time I plugged it in.  Sorry I'm not much help!

  • We bought a refurbished Time Capsule at the Apple Store about 6 months ago.  Our Macbooks wirelessly back up to it every hour or so (we never used to manually back up, so it's nice to not have to think about it).  It also functions as our wireless router.

  • You just need to use "Disk Utility". Just plug in the drive, open up disk utility (you can just do it in spotlight) and format it as the default option (I believe it's "Mac OS Journaled"). Please make sure you've selected the external drive and not your hard drive because reformatting wipes everything on the drive.
