Putnam and Dutchess ladies...

DH and I are not finding what we need in a home/property in Westchester and are now starting to look at Putnam or Dutchess (if not, we'll need to do a complete relocation). We'd like to live in or near a town that has walkability, parks, groceries, etc. And, of course, great school are a priority. So, please recommend your town or best towns/school districts in these counties. where should we begin?

Re: Putnam and Dutchess ladies...

  • I think you will be hard pressed to find walkability in Dutchess or most of Northern Putnam. I'm not as familiar with Southern Putnam.  Brewster is a good school district as well as Carmel for Northern Putnam.  In Dutchess Arlington is great. All of those have the issue of the high schools being huge.(I think Arlington's class is well over 1000)

I do not currently recommend Pawling they are going through some very hard times however you still have a few years and let's face it with all the challenges facing the districts currently a few years could mean a lot of changes in any school you look at.

  • I grew up in Brewster and 100% recommend it.  I live in the Carmel District now in Kent.  My taxes are INSANE.  I honestly am not a fan of the schools... We will be moving back to Brewster before Jack enters school.  They are closing 1 elementary school in Brewster and combining them, and moving some grades around.  The middle school is in the middle of a large remodel also.

Taxes are more reasonable in Brewster due to the commercial businesses in town.  Carmel as nothing and they keep turning down Patterson Crossing *Lowes, walmart, etc*

There are no real sidwalks in either but we do have the bike path that now starts in the village of Brewster runs into Westchester County and further south.

Stay away from Putnam Lake section of Brewster/Patterson, and Village of Brewster, if you want to shoot me streets I'd be more then happy to help.

  • I have lived in Pawling all my life.  It is a beautiful town and if you lived in the village, would have a ton of stuff in walking distance (except groceries) and Metro North is there too.  But, the taxes are INSANE!  DH and I look at houses and are sad at how expensive it is to live here.

  • We live on the boarder of Fishkill and it has a cute little town that we walk through but most of the homes are not within walking distance of it. We are also close to Rt 9 so we have all the shopping. Taxes are decent (for now).

We like Fishkill a lot. They often have events going on in the town, such as block parties and craft fairs. The only playground tend to be at the schools but there are a few parks in the area that have play sets.

Our friends daughter goes to the local elementary school and they love it. They love the teachers and the class sizes.

  • Thank you all so much for your input. It looks like we are going to try to move and settle in somewhere before this baby arrives (hold me!) so, I will likely have more questions as we move forward.

  • We're in the process of building a home in Dutchess County.  Hopewell Junction.

I was told that the Arlington school district is desireable as is the Wappinger Central School district, which is where I ended up.  When I talk to parents in the area they have nothing but great things to say about the elementary school, but as someone else noted, the school is HUGE.  My son is in one of 6 2nd grade classes.

Nothing is really within walking distance, but the town has all the essentials (bank, grocery store, cleaners, pizza, bagels...etc)

I came from Long Island so the biggest adjustment for me is that "major" shopping (like the mall or Costco) is 1/2 hour drive, but the taxes (for now) are fantastic for the size of the home we're building and traffic is minimal.  It is absolutely BEAUTIFUL in the Hudson Valley.

People are super nice, it has a nice community feel to it and there is soooo much to do with the kids.   I've only been here a month, but I love it and it makes me wonder why I didn't relocate sooner.

  • Stratsey - thank you! Hopewell Junction is definitely on our list. Good luck with your home build and happy you are liking the HV. I've been here (Westchester) since '92 and it's hard to picture living out of this area.
