so I finally got around to trying the headband curls last night and it worked! I was really lazy about it so I'm sure I could get it to work even better, but I was pleasantly surprised even though it was falling out that I got some great curls. I touched it up with a curling iron, but I would say the total time I spent wasn't any longer that I would on a normal morning (and I don't curl or straighten my hair every day because it's too much work) - counting the time I wash my hair, let it start drying, scrunching and then putting it up or styling it. I washed my hair Sunday morning so it was dry when I did it (and yes, I'm one of those people that doesn't wash my hair every day, so I just shower without getting it wet).
If nothing else, it gives a great base to start from if you're going to curl your hair anyway and it would shave off a ton of time. I totally plan on doing this whenever I want this kind of look (which I do for nice evenings, but I have to do the whole thing by hand):

oh and I also tried the 'sock-bun' method and that was a total fail.

ok, found a new picture. Here is a tutorial (she actually links to the 'original' tutorial, but just another idea of how it turns out)! Mine definitely did not look as polished when it was up, but I did it in maybe 5 minutes and who cares really? lol
I didn't think it was that bad, I seriously spent 5 minutes doing it because I was like "what the heck, we'll see how this goes" and my expectations were so low because the sock bun was so bad. I have pretty long hair (boob length) and it did all get in there. Like in the link I posted above, the back doesn't get as curly, but I think mine turned out better - don't just stuff it in there, actually keep trying to wrap it. And you can sort of push the hair that's already wrapped 'forward' to make more room.

i wanna try the headband thing!!! i keep forgetting to try it, maybe this week sometime.
what kind of curling iron do you use to get curls like that picture on a regular basis?
Well, I did it this morning and they still look good, but my hair holds curl pretty well. However, I have heard girls say that this kind of method holds even very straight hair, so it's worth a try. You might have to try doing different things to see what works. I think it helps though if you're hair is a little 'dirty' (I had put product in it in the morning when I scrunched it and then brushed it out before I did the headband). Some people get it just a little damp, others do it dry, it just depends.
I use a 2" I think, when I want the big curls, just a regular Conair or something. Sometimes I touch it up with my 1" (or 1.5, gah, I don't know, one is bigger and one is smaller, lol) though. But my method has been to do the following (can you tell I'm a scientist and make protocols?):
- let hair dry a little bit so it isn't soaking wet, spray with heat protectant (I use Blow) and put in messy bun. *this will probably not be replaced with the head band method and on dry hair etc*
- I take out the messy bun which now is pretty crazy looking and do not brush it. Starting from the base of the neck, I take a section, hold the curling iron in the open position at the base of the hair and wrap the hair around it and then close the iron (because I don't want to hold it open). I let the curl then fall into my hand and then slide it onto an open bobby pin to just hold it in the curled position. I'll do about 4-5, spray (I use Treseme ultra fine mist) and let them cool/dry like that before taking out the bobby pin. I just work my way up doing that.
Using the bobby pin makes it go a little faster because I don't feel the need to keep it on the iron as long, and it's probably a little better for it (I also don't hold the ends against the iron). It's surprising how smooth it turns out even though you never brush it - I'm serious! Brushing took out the natural curl and volume. It does look a little big, but relaxes nicely, so I do it in the afternoon if I'm going out at night. It does turn out something like this:
Anyway, the headband gives you plenty of curl to start with so I don't think I'll have to do this any more!

I could definitely see it being a problem if the hair isn't long enough. How long is your hair? Did you have products in it (which I think helps)?

My hair is just below my shoulders. But it's pretty layered. The shortest layers are about chin length. I had mousse in it, but that's it. I'm gonna have to try it again. I did it, and then slept on it, so maybe that was an issue too?
I slept on mine too (sorry if that's wasn't clear, I did it last night and took it out this morning, which I think is supposed to be the idea), but I think that maybe your hair is just a little short. I'm only guessing because for the most part, the curls start around my chin (except in the very front), but because my hair is longer you see more curls. Not sure if that makes sense, lol. BUT you should look at the link I posted because she puts it back on her head a little bit so maybe you'd get your hair to wrap around more times. Also, you could try the sock bun curls (just look around on youtube) and do a couple on your head.
