Meghann and all runners

Talk to me about breathing and shoes.

I need to start running outside now that it is cooler but will have to do it at night because I refuse to run at 4am in the pitch black...alone on a track.  Here's my question though - I've heard you are supposed to breathe in/out of your nose but seriously, how can you do that?  I feel like I get zero oxygen.  Then do you do a pattern of breathing because no one actually ever told me I should do it but I figured out that breathing is half the battle of running.  So, what do you do?

Also, I need shoe rec's.  We have a store called "Run On" that I think will fit me for running shoes.  I need to visit there and see what they say but I think it's time I get some better shoes!

Re: Meghann and all runners

  • i breathe in/out only through my nose when i run. usually i do 2 breathes in and 1 long one out. if i feel like i need more oxygen i just take a deep breath in through my nose.

can't help you on the shoes. mine are asics and seem to be fine for now. good luck!

  • Can't help on the breathing- I don't pay attention!

But for shoes...I PPH Brooks brand

  • Okay, I'm going to sound like a weirdo with this one....

I have a breathing pattern.  (stick with me on this story) A long time ago, someone told me that when you breathe through your nose, you get more oxygen to your brain.  A while back, I noticed I was yawning a lot when running, which, in my head, means that I'm not getting enough oxygen to my brain.  Since I was breathing only through my mouth (i can't even fathom breathing only through my nose while running), I decided to add in some nose-breaths.  So, now I do four breaths (inhale and exhale) through my mouth, and the fifth through my nose.  It works for me.  And  bonus: all of the counting keeps my mind occupied and helps distract me.

But, you just need to figure out what works for you.

For shoes, definitely get fitted by people who know what they are doing.  Don't be afraid to spend a little money on good shoes.  The money is worth less injury.  I'm a huge fan of Brooks, but I know a lot of people who love Asics (which I do not like).  It's such a personal thing, because it depends so much on the shape of your feet, and how you move, etc.

  • Actually, that makes me feel less weird because I couldn't figure out how I was supposed to ONLY breathe from my noise without dying, lol!  So, I started doing exactly what you said but noticed my pattern was more like how you breathe in childbirth and switched it, lol!  So, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one.

I think I'll head to the running store this weekend to see what they tell me :)

  • the nose breathing is tough but when i was in highschool i did a lot of running/training and my instructor told me to do it all through the nose so i guess i'm used to it. now when i play soccer and i don't pay attention to my breathing i get winded with mouth breathing. fun!
