Letter of Explanation ??

Can anyone give me a sample of what a letter of explanation is supposed to look like for employment history since DH has had 6 or more months between jobs?

Re: Letter of Explanation ??

  • Use Google. I found some great letter examples on there.

  • What did you search?  Everything I came up with was about credit history

  • You can ask them for a sample. I had to provide letters of explanation for all deposits into my bank account. As a freelancer who only has direct deposit for my full time job it got really annoying. Most of the time Bank of America wrote it up for me based off what I told them in an email and then I signed it.
  • Our mortgage broker handled all of these "letters" for us (my favorite being the one where DH and I gave permission to each other to use our money to buy the house since all of our accounts are joint).  He drafted, we reviewed and signed.  DH's employer also had to write one--they changed company names mid-year so he got 2 W-2s and the lender couldn't understand that he had only held one job at the same company all year ("But why are there 2 w-2s?")

I don't think the letters have to be anything fancy--ours certainly weren't.  You just have to explain the situation.

  • Just type something up on a Word doc. No need to be fancy. 99% of the time, our loan officers just type up what the borrower said. The letters are generally not even signed, but must be done so at closing. Unless it is some really ridiculous situation, and the loan stands a chance of being declined.... or if its regarding occupancy.

Something like, "In 2010, I was laid off from xxx company due to reduction in workforce. I agressively applied for any and all positions that were in my job field. Due to the state of the economy, it took me six months to find a job that was a good match, and a salary commesurate with my experience."

I see this all day every day.
