How big of a salary range do you give?
1. Just wondering in general how you determine your range.
2. If a company has posted a range with a job ad, do you just put that or tell them that in an interview when they ask?
Re: How big of a salary range do you give?
I found with the last three jobs I applied for, I said my salary was $1-$5 (example). Each company offered me $1.
1. I usually couch it with wording to the effect that "while my total cash comp is currently X (i.e. salary & bonus), I take into careful consideration the total compensation package offered." Paid time off, benefits, retirement contributions etc. can vary widely.
2. If the range is published (not common enough imo) then I answer "based on the advertised range, we're in the ballpark of what I am looking for, however I do consider total compensation when comparing opportunities." or something like that.
I wouldn't give them a range cause as the previous poster suggested, they will likely give you the lowball of the range. Let them come to you with a number. They have one in mind, get them to say it first. You can get around the issue by saying things like you would need to see the complete benefits package, and that you know that they - being a respectful company - are likely paying the market rate for the position, etc etc. They know what the rate is and they know what they want to pay. They just want to see how low they can get you for.
After years of lowballing myself, I won't give a number ever again.
