I have a two part question about cover letters and applying for multiple jobs with the same employer.
I am going to be applying for two jobs with the same employer that are closely related but are different positions. Both jobs are for the Facilities department of a University. One is for an Architect Position and One is for a Facilities Planner Position. I am qualified for both positions and both have basically the same job requirements/skill set listed in the job ads.
From what I gather from reading the job descriptions the only difference in the two is the pay scale and actual job title. Obviously I'd prefer the higher paying job (which is the Architect position and is the position I hold at my current employer).
1. Should I apply for both positions or should I only apply for the higher paid position and hope that they would consider me for the lower paid position as well if I was not what they were looking for with the higher paid position?
2. If I should apply for both positions, how should I handle the cover letter? The jobs are listed on the University job site and the only option I would have to apply for both would be to apply for each separately. What I am struggling with is sending two cover letters that will essentially be the same. Since both jobs are so closely related there really is no way for me to address each cover letter with different wording without it sounding like BS filler.
What would you do?
