Moving advice, to move both cars or not?

I feel like this is a stupid scenario, but H and I can't make a decision.

I have a nice car, he has a POS car that got him through college and such and it's not worth much...but we don't want to purchase a new car right now. We are moving soon so here are our options:

A) Take both cars across country. Hook his up to the moving truck, I drive separate. Will cost us an additional $700-$800 gas for my car. Don't have to purchase car.

B) Hook my car up to the moving truck, and ship his car (or the other way around). We get to drive together but shipping a car is probably $1100...but we save on gas $$$.

C) Sell his car to CarMax and get about $1200. Drive together. Save on gas money. But we have to buy a new vehicle in VA. And we'll probably have to settle for a very inexpensive car. (Like $2000).

We haven't been able to make up our minds yet.

TIA ladies!

  • I'd keep your car that you *know* works well even though it's not an up to date, wonderful car.

If you buy another car, even for $2,000, you could end up with a junker. KWIM?

  • Why can't you be a one car family in VA?
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • Well if it's a PCS you would be getting paid for gas anyways, so it's not like it's money out of your pocket.

Unless you were planning on selling that car to begin with, I would probably keep it.  Whether you want to drive it or ship it is up to you guys.  I know our movers wouldn't tow any cars, so that wasn't an option for us.  I really didn't want to drive from NY to WA with us in separate cars, so we paid out of pocket to ship mine and drove H's.  We ended up getting reimbursed more than enough to cover the gas and shipping and extra, so I'm really glad we went that route.  Even if we hadn't been reimbursed, the extra couple hundred dollars we spent was more than worth it to me to not have to drive alone.  But it really depends on what you and your H are comfortable with.

  • Blue, that was sort of my thoughts too. We know the ins and outs of H's car and he doesn't really want to get a new junker that may or may not work all too well.

Stan, because I will be working in VA so I will need my car, so H can't take it. And I don't think me getting up every morning to take him, and trying to figure out how he'll get home if I'm at work is going to make sense for us. There is always the possibility that he can car pool with someone, etc. We have talked that over for awhile and we think we're really going to need two cars and I'm going to have a little bit of a commute for work.

Beach, that's sort of what I'm leaning towards....a few extra hundred bucks to ship it, tow mine, and then we can drive together seems like it will be worth it.

KC, I know we're suppose to be reimbursed, but we were kind of thinking the short term out of pocket expenses, plus H has been saying that he's going to have to pay for a lot of gear when training starts so I was factoring that in a little bit too. We've never had to be reimbursed for H's expenses or anything so I don't know how long it takes.

Thanks for the advice ladies! :)

  • I'd drive/ship.  Down the road, you can sell, but having 2 cars when you're starting out and trying to get to know the area is invaluable.

Says the person who's been in a 1 car household since the 2nd car is still being shipped.  I even lived here for over a month without a car just fine, but it's been a struggle since H has it, and I don't.  It's like, b/c I know we own a car, I didn't buy a bus pass, even though I love using the bus.  So I'm stuck, not wanting to pay bus fare but not having a car available.

  •  Keep the car...you will get money for gas.

  • Another vote for keeping the car you know.

Not sure where in VA you'll be, but there's a good chance you'll be near the Hampton Roads area.  There can be some pretty major traffic headaches there, especially if a tunnel or bridge is involved in either of your commutes.  Something to keep in mind as you make this decision.

  • We've done both--shipped one of two cars and drove both. When we moved from NoVA to SoCal, we shipped one car. We shipped the smaller car (it was a nice convertible, less than a year old). DH's friend signed for it in Cali. It was scratched and the driver lost keys (which he replaced, but we then had to go get properly programmed at the dealership). We vowed never to ship a car again if we could avoid it. When we moved back from SoCal to VA, we drove both cars. It was a PITA, being in separate cars, but it was less expensive and we didn't have the worry about the condition of either vehicle.

If you plan to do any sightseeing or visiting with family or friends, you may run into the problem we did--your car may arrive ahead of you. You will need to ask the shipping company how they deal with this.

    Good luck with your decision!
