Anyone live in or know anything about knoxville, ia?

We may possibly be moving which may allow me to SAH, but wanted real life accounts of the town before we take the plunge. Any info would be amazing. Thanks.

Re: Anyone live in or know anything about knoxville, ia?

  • I lived in Knoxville for 3 months about 9 years ago.  I really disliked it.  It is a pretty small town.  It has a tiny emergency clinic, a Hyvee, a Walmart, a super small library, a dairy queen, a lot of crappy depressed housing, and then there's the race track.  It's not a very long drive to get there now that hgwy 5 is 4 lanes all the way there so you should take a quick drive out there to see it.  I think if you are used to and like small town rural living, it's probably okay, but it was way too small town for me.

  • Thanks....that is actually what I was afraid of. We currently live in Indianola and it is small but very nice. We did drive around knoxville and it did seem a little depressing. The upside is that my husband wouldn't have to commute and I could stay home since the kids are still little and not in school yet. I work part time now, but it is downtown and I'm afraid I'd hate an hour commute. I'm just wondering if it is worth it or if we should stay put and both drive/work. I don't hate my job by any means and I'd be losing all of my wonderful benefits. We are both professional people so I'm just so unsure about it all. It will take some serious thinking if he gets this job. It will be very good for his career but.....I sure wish it was in a more exciting location.

  • I work with people who live there now, and they commute daily to WDM. LONG drive for sure!
  • As far as commuting.  I don't think it would be quite an hour to commute to downtown DSM from Knoxville now that the 4 lane hgwy is completed.  Maybe with bad weather in the winter time, but it shouldn't be more than 45 minutes to get to downtown, maybe even less than that if you hop on the hgwy 5 bypass and come into downtown from the southern side.

Definitely up to you guys but I remember going jogging around town in a regular t-shirt and soccer shorts and having guys yelling profane things at me, etc.  Not a very welcoming atmosphere...
