Any engineers?

Any engineers here? Looking for some advice! DH is going to a civil engineer's dinner tonight through school. I believe it's mainly for networking and recruiting. He still works as a contractor because his degree is in progress in civil engineering, so he's freaking out about what he should wear (which I find so cute!) since he hasn't been in the professional engineering workplace much yet. I told him to wear his suit pants and a collared shirt, and to bring his jacket and tie, and I'd ask around and see what "professional attire" means to an engineer. Would it be a full suit? Slacks and shirt only? Slacks, shirt and tie? He said he didn't want to look/feel like a douchbag by over dressing Stick out tongue.

I come from the high tech/software industry, so I think we tend to be a little more casual unless it's a big meeting or an interview.

Re: Any engineers?

  • I think he should be fine in dress pants and a button shirt.

the engineers I work with, we are all very casual. I know quite a few people that would show up in jeans. But I would probably dress in a skirt and nice top.

  • I think that dress pants and a buttoned shirt would look fine. It is between the suit and just pants/shirt. He could always carry a tie with him and try to determine if it is needed.

  • I assume that the recruiters to network with will be coming straight from work?

I wouldn't wear a full suit.   The slacks and shirt should be fine (I would bet that or slacks with a polo shirt will be what the recruiters wear).

Tell him to get there a few minutes early and watch the people enter the building - then decide on tie vs. no tie.

This will be a recruiters first impression so as long as he doesn't spill lunch on his shirt - he should be good to go.

  • Thanks ladies! Yeah, I think everyone will be coming straight from work. I know when I've been interviewing, the interviewers tell me "this is a pretty casual place but I dress up for interviews so you don't feel weird" LOL. But since this is more dinner and networking, nice pants and shirt sound good. I'll let him know!
