Bedding colors - I'm stuck.

Our bedroom walls are a blue/teal color (see swatch here). We need new bedding.

My thought was navy menswear, pinstripes, polka dots, paisley, etc.  I can't find that though, so I moved on to gray.  I picked up a comforter similar to this and haven't even taken it out of the bag because it isn't giving me the warm fuzzies.  The main area of our open floor plan is a cheerful yellow, so now I'm wondering if I should bring that yellow into the bedroom to help tie it all together.  Target has some super cute yellow bedding, but of course I can't find it on their website.

Any advice?

Re: Bedding colors - I'm stuck.

  • I would say find some little yellow accents like pillows, vase, or photos that have yellow in it but maybe not the bedding as it could become overwhelming.  Just a thought.
  • LOL You've overestimated my decorating skills.  The less stuff I have to dust, the better.  My bedroom literally consists of a bed, a laundry sorter, and two dressers.  No decorations, nothing on the walls yet.

We're yanking out the high pile carpet (blech) in exchange for oak hardwood to match the other bedrooms in a couple months, so maybe once that's done and it feels cleaner, I'll be more motivated to decorate.

My guest bedroom is coming along though!  We finally got the paint slapped over the primer this weekend, so now it's a pretty white with pops of bright green.

  • I would get a plan white comforter and add some yellow pillows and other accents (flowers in a vase, a blanket at the end of the bed, etc.).  I think yellow works best with a white background to "pop" off of.  Here are some examples of rooms with yellow and white:

  • LOL!!! I was like that until I started to watch HGTV and now I think I could build a house.  HAA!!! Totally couldn't!

I would agree decorating before the floors are finished would be hard.  That is one thing when looking at buying our house I wanted no carpet in any rooms.

Here is a link with some yellow accent pillows.  Perhaps that will inspire Big Smile  A little pricey but maybe there is an cheaper version.

  • We've been using a white down alternative comforter since 2007 and decided we've outgrown our ability to keep it looking nice.  That thing has been washed every other week because of dogs and is looking rather tattered.

  • That's understandable.  If you like the yellow and white bedspread in the last picture, it's on Pottery Barn's website (link below).  They might have other comforters in that color family you like as well.

I do love that bedspread and it's very similar to the one at the local Target!  If I were to do a bedspread like that, what color accents should I eventually throw in there?  Stick to white and yellow?

Pretty! I think white and yellow and maybe a bit of gray would be pretty.

  • I like the gray with it but I see why you aren't getting the warm and fuzzies.  The teal plus the gray can look kind of like a rainy day.  I think adding in some yellow throw pillows or accent art would brighten it up a bit.  Even adding a shelf some where with a small vase and one yellow flower along with a couple of books would add some color.

If you changed the matting of this from the brown to gray, it could be perfect.

  • If you keep your wall color the same, you could add that blue color in the room so there isn't such a stark contrast.  If you have a hard time finding accessories that match your wall color, you can find some vases or picture frames (to go on a dresser or nightstand) at a thrift store and paint them to match.  Otherwise, I would stick to mostly white and yellow.

If you want to change your wall color, you can go with a light gray, tan or green (thoes are the first colors that come to mine).

  • Can you people talk to me about bedskirts?  We have to have something to protect the box spring from the dogs, so we've had a cheap white bedskirt on there, but OMG, it's so dingy and of course, the Bandit fuzz sticks to it.

Can I just wrap a fitted sheet around it, or will that look goofy?  Is it worth a shot, or should I skip it and go straight for a new bedskirt?

I actually wanted gray walls, but Joe said he'd feel like he was walking into a 1940s silent movie.  We've only had this color on the walls since May, so it's staying Smile

I do have a stash of picture frames in the basement, along with the leftover blue paint, so I'll try that.  Thank you!

Genius.  Poppies are the California state flower, so we saw quite a few of them in our time there!  That's a perfect way to incorporate our past.

  • Agree with JustLes paint somethings with the left over paint. I did this a few years ago with some lamps and picture frames and they are by far my most favorite!!!

The bed skirt is hard. I just get the ones that come with the bedding.  Oh and I have tons of dog hair on it.

I'd just go for a new bedskirt. Depending on the bedding set you get sometimes they come with a bedskirt. I know the set I bought at Target in March did.

My set would go awesome with your walls, its the steally blue/teal color with chocolate brown. However I really love that your doing yellow so stick with that!

Haha.  I can see why he would feel that way about gray walls.  Good luck with the picture frames!  I've revamped some thrift store finds in the past (I usually spray paint them white) and it usually ends up great.

I found some pictures of rooms with blue and yellow so you can see that the color combination can work well:

Thank you for sharing that!!! I have to wash the bed skirt all of the time.  Our pups shed like crazy!!

See how their hallway is that cheery yellow?  That's exactly what we have going on, but we can see it from the bed.

ETA: And they have a couple gray pillows!

Looks like you guys have nailed down the palette.  The gray comforter is definitely going back!

Awesome!  I'm excited for your room's makeover.  I hope you post pictures when it's completed. :)

  •  I really like the bedding, you should keep it and add some yellow accents.  Try throw pillows, sheets, and maybe a lamp.
