reupholstering a chair?

Have any of you had an arm chair reupholstered?  Can you give me really rough ballpark estimates of what the costs might be?

We have a fabric-sided arm chair that we bought for $5 at a yard sale many years ago, never intending to keep it so long... it's ugly and pink, and really nothing special (not an antique), but it's comfy and cozy.  I'm trying to decide if it's worth reupholstering, or if we should just try to find something nicer... furniture is so expensive though.

Any insights/recommendations would be appreciated!

Re: reupholstering a chair?

  • We had Strippers on Selby reupholster the below chair for us.  It's fairly large, has removeable pillow and seat cushions, and piping around most of the edges.  They charged about $400 for it (it's hourly).  I brought in my own fabric that I got from HS Harris fabric outlet for about $60.  They don't charge extra to bring in your own fabric if you mention that you saw that on their website.  They did a great job and were the cheapest quote that I found.

  • Great, thanks!  What a cool chair (especially with the new fabric, of course).

See, it sounds like it's expensive enough that while it's totally worth doing if you have a cool chair with great structure and features... almost seems silly to bother with an ugly relatively charmless (but comfortable!) yard sale chair.

Hmmm.... I'll give it some more thought.  Thanks for the info and recommendation!

  • Thank you!  We fell in love with style of the chair...not the fabric. For us, it was worth the cost since the chair matched our couch.

You could try doing it yourself.  I've done a little bench seat and that wasn't too hard.  It would depend on the style of your chair.  You just pull off the old fabric and use those as patterns on the new fabric, then reattach with an upholstery stapler (with new stuffing if you want).  Honestly though, fabric alone will probably run you at least $50.  Not sure how much you're looking to put into it.

  • I'm not sure either (re: how much I want to put into it)... my gut feeling is that anything more than $200 would probably not be worth it for this particular chair, but I need to do some more browsing/thinking to get a better sense of my options...

I'm not sure, but I think DYI-ing it might be difficult, because the entire chair is fabric.  Kind of like this, but with a higher back and all fabric (ugly ugly pink fabric): http://www.select2gether.com/montecito-leather-armchair-in-dark-brown-abbyson-living-

  • I DIY'ed a chair. Taking the upholstery off was more of a PITA than putting the new fabric on. I have some blog posts about it. http://homemadeislovely.blogspot.com/search/label/upholstery. It cost me around $100 for all the supplies, not including the chair. I can see my mistakes but everyone who saw it thought it looked professional (or they were just being nice).

  • Thanks Jenny--wow, that looks like quite the project!  I'm bookmarking your blog post about it, in case I feel adventurous when I have more free time (post-PhD)...  It certainly sounds like a more affordable option, $$-wise, but it looks more involved than I have time for at the moment.  Something to consider for the future though...

My H and I got 2 chairs from his grandma that we want to re-upholster ourselves....you give me hope we can do it!  Thanks for posting about this, flip!

  • My mom does upholstery in-home, I can get you her contact info if you want some advice on the worth-it or not thoughts. You can send her a pic and other details and she can give you the low-down. Essentially, if it's a quality brand, it's worth the $400 or whatever, because these days, you won't get a quality frame for the cost to reupholster a good piece.

That said, Jenny did an absolutely amazing job on her chair, and I am so impressed with the tutorial.  I'm no expert, but I think hers is a fairly good-quality chair, and the DIY job is excellent. The cushion looks awesome. Way to breathe new life!

Sure, if you want to pm me with your mom's contact info, that would be great.  I'm pretty sure my chair isn't a quality brand, but... I still want to give it some thought. Thanks!
