Do any of you have an Ed.D. or a Ph.D.?

I am applying to a program for next spring and need to write a personal statement.  Besides my goals for research and future career, can you suggest anything else I might want to include?

I've written numerous cover letters, but never a personal statement.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

Re: Do any of you have an Ed.D. or a Ph.D.?

  • I have a PhD. In my personal statements I included:

    1. Why everything I've done in the past (which allowed me to highlight some of my accomplishments) have been the PERFECT path to entering this specific PhD program and why.

    2. My research interests and how they tie to my past experiences, as well as how I think they fit in with the research interests of the specific faculty members there

    3. My enthusiasm for teaching based on several teaching-ish experiences I had (as a tutor or corporate trainer, for example) and what I hope to do while at that school in terms of teaching

    4. My career goals and how this specific program will help me reach them.

As you can see, it's very important to tailor your letters to the specific program, which requires a lot of research, so definitely start sooner rather than later. I have no idea how EdDs work, but you might ask someone with one if it'd be worth switching parts 2 and 3 for an EdD program.

Thank you so much!  I would love to get the PhD, but I can get the EdD for free because I work at the Univ. and that's all they offer.  Even though my ultimate goal is to teach, I won't even get looked at if I put that in my letter (it's an Educational Leadership Doctorate).  So, My concentration will be in student development.

Thanks for the tips!  That helps a lot!

  • They just want to know what your deal is. So explain your current situation and why this degree will help you to your goal. Explain what you have been doing professionally but don't really get into all the personal stuff unless it is relavent. Also don't over think it and keep it simple.
  • Ph.D Geophysics. PPs are absolutely correct. They want to know about you, your interest in the field, the contributions you plan to make etc.
  • Thanks everyone!

  • I'm in my first semester of an Ed.D. program.  Make sure you include what makes you different from other applicants.  This can be done in part by discussing what you want to research and why.  I was afraid my chemistry background and minimal education experence would be a problem, but after talking with one of the professors, I realized it was great to make my statement stand out.
