Riding the T

Hi Ladies,

I have a question about riding the T that I hope you can help me with.  I use to live in Massachusetts till 2004 and I know that riding the T has changed since then.  My DH and I are going to be going into Boston on Monday and I figured it would be cheaper to park and ride the T in instead of parking in Boston.  I planned on parking at the Riverside station, are we able to get our T tickets at that station and how much would it be for the ticket?

We do not have a charlie card.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Beth

Re: Riding the T

  • Parking at Riverside is $5.75 and the T each way is $2/pp if you don't have a Charlie Card (if you did it would be $1.70 each way). They have kiosks at every station to buy a Charlie Ticket (paper). If you can find a T employee they may be able to get you a Charlie Card (plastic, like a credit card) but most do not carry them. So round trip for the two of you would be $13.75. That will probably be cheaper than any garage in the city...if you can find a spot on a work day. But the ride is long, about 40 minutes from Riverside to Park St station.

  • FWIW, the parking garage under Boston Commons is pretty reasonably priced. Also, you can use this website to look up rates for various lots/garages in the area.  You can put an address of the area you'll be in, the hours you plan on parking, and it'll give you very accurate (in my experience) information on what it will cost you at various lots.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

That's true for the weekend, but it is pricer during the week (if there are spots open...not sure how regularly it is used by commuters). But she said she was coming Monday so I didn't mention that garage.

OP, here's the info for the Common Garage:

Weekdays:   Enter between 6 AM - 4 PM
    Up to 1 hr: $10
    Up to 2 hrs: $14
    Up to 3 hrs: $18
    Up to 10 hrs: $23
    24-hour maximum charge: $28

Also, if you are traveling to Boston during rush hour (6:30-8:30am) leave ample time...traffic is a nightmare.
